Henry Nugent Bell, The Huntingdon Peerage
Henry Nugent Bell
The Huntingdon Peerage
London, Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1820. First edition. Leather. A first edition of Bell's work on the history and restoration of the earldom of Huntingdon. First Edition. Featuring an engraved portrait frontispiece and one engraved portrait plate. Contains a fold-out genealogical table. 'Comprising a detailed account of the evidence and proceedings connected with the recent restoration of the earldom; together with the report of the Attorney-General on that occasion&apos. 'To which is prefixed a genealogical and biographical history of the illustrious House of Hastings, including a memoir of the present earl and his family&apos. Henry Nugent Bell (1792–1822) was an Irish genealogist. Bell followed the profession of a legal antiquary, and, in order to obtain a recognised status, entered himself at the Inner Temple, 17 Nov. 1818. In the same year he acquired considerable distinction by his successful advocacy of the claim of Mr. Hastings to the long-dormant earldom of Huntingdon; the estates, however, were legally invested in the Earl of Moira's family. Bell published a detailed account of the proceedings in The Huntingdon Peerage, and the narrative of his various adventures, which are given at length, displays a suspicious luxuriance of imagination not altogether in keeping with what professed to be a grave genealogical treatise. To the unsold copies a new title- page was affixed in 1821, with a genealogical table and additional portraits. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, sound, rubbed in places. Internally, firmly bound. Some scattered light foxing prominent to the last few pages and the plates. Stain to fore-edge. Copperplate ink signature to first blank. Slight tear to the paper of the front pastedown. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

London, Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1820. First edition. Leather. A half leather hardback with gilt lettering on the spine. Scarce. First edition. This copy was owned by the author Henry H Gibbs, dated 1851 and he has in a very neat copperplate added some marginalia and extended the family tree on the reverse of the folding plate as pictured. Earl of Huntingdon is a title, which has been created several times in the Peerage of England. The title is chiefly associated with the Hastings family. "The genealogical account of the family is wholly recomposed from the most authentic sources, and the singular circumstances attending the establishment of the claim to the title . are detailed with more spirit and vivacity than truth" - Lowndes. The previous owner has updated the family tree along with some marginalia on page 343. The binding is firm. The inner hinges have been reinforced. There is seem wear to the extremities, including bumping and rubbing. The pages are generally clean and bright with some minor spotting. There is a small closed tear on the front endpaper. There are institutional nameplates on the front endpapers, as well as an ink inscription. There are institutional ink stamps on some of the pages. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
