[1], [1 blank], 54 pp. (German text); 27, [1] ll. (Arabic text).First edition of a collection of proverbs written by Abu al Qasim Mahmoud ibn Omar al-Zamakhshari (1074-1143), a medieval Muslim theologian, linguist, poet and interpreter of the Quran from a region in Central Asia, present-day southwest Turkmenistan, in the original Arabic with a German translation. He was nicknamed “Jar Allah” (God's neighbour) and is best known for his work Al-Kashshaf, an interpretation and linguistic analysis of Quranic expressions. Al-Zamakhshari was a Mu'tazilite scholar of the Islamic Golden Age. The present first edition of his work was published as a New Year's gift for the friends and fellow orientalists of the editor-translator, Freiherr Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall. His translation of the text also appeared in two annotated editions, published in Leipzig in 1835 and in Stuttgart in 1836."[His] contributions to oriental studies were extraordinary, not only through their sheer volume, but also because he was often the first to deal with the subjects on which he wrote so extensively. Although most of his works are outdated now, he played a major role in the development of Western knowledge about the classical civilizations of the Middle East during the Islamic period." (Encyclopaedia Iranica XI, pp. 644-646).Binding shows minor signs of wear around the spine and corners of the boards, slightly foxed throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Catalogue of Arabic printed books in the British Museum (vol 1, 1894), 14578.a.2; Goedeke vol. 7, p. 766, no. 90; Zenker vol. 1, 1347. About the author: J. T. 135, [4 blank]; 4 pp.Album with manuscripts in French and Dutch from the notable Amsterdam literary family Alberdingk Thijm. More than half gives a full account, in French, of a tourist trip to Paris in 1838 by Mrs. Catharina Alberdingk Thijm (1793-1864) and her friends. Without their children they enjoyed the amusement and culture of fashionable Paris. It starts with their departure from Amsterdam, on Monday, 25 June 1838, with a Van Gendt & Loos diligence (stage coach). They changed coaches in Rotterdam at five o'clock in the morning, and at Zwijndrecht boarded a steamer for Paris, still quite a novelty, as the author notes. She makes many interesting comments, for instance quoting epitaphs of tombstones, and at one point noting that the beautiful promenades of the Boulevard d'Italiens and the Rue Richelieu offer no shade, because the trees had been cut down to serve as barricades in the Revolution of July 1830. The account ends with the author returning home after a stay of about six weeks in Paris, and with notes about her intention to present her children with her journal, hoping they will kindly overlook any faults in construction or otherwise.Extra inserted is a manuscript poem in Dutch by Josephus Albertus Alberdingk Thijm (1820-1889), Catharina’s son, written at the occasion of a party given in honour of an old aunt, dated December 1878, and signed with the initials J.A.Th.The Alberdingk Thijm family produced some of the foremost Dutch writers of the 19th-century. The author of the present poem, Josephus Albertus was a Romantic poet and must have been one of the children for whom Catharina wrote her travel account. He was the father of the writers Catharina and Karel (pseudonym Lodewijk van Deyssel). In very good condition.

[1] l. text + 4 plates; XII, [4], 255, [1 blank] pp.Very rare album with four beautiful hand-coloured aquatint views to Alberti's ethnographic monograph on the Xhosa people ("Kaffers"), of South Africa, together with the first edition of the French translation of this monograph. Even though the plates are mentioned in the preface of the text volume, they are rarely found together. All the plates are brightly coloured and remarkably fresh and lively, evoking the beauty of the African landscape and the culture of the Xhosa. Lodewyk Alberti (1768-1812) came to the Netherlands in 1784 as lieutenant in the Dutch army, and left for the Cape in 1802. He successfully kept the peace between Xhosas, Khoisan and European colonists, but conflicts flared up soon after he left in 1806. He describes the situation and climate of Caffria, as well as the appearance and physical strength of the Xhosa, but mainly focuses on their culture.Ad 1: small tear in the text leaf of atlas, but restored, plates fine except for a tiny blemish on the first plate; ad 2: some sentences marked in pencil the margins and an occasional annotation, plates slightly browned and binding rubbed along the extremities. Very good set.l Bobins collection 68 (French text & album); Gay, Bibl. de l'Afrique et l'Arabe 3153 (text volume only); Mendelssohn I, p. 18; Landwehr, Coloured plates 218; cf. 56; 72; [8] pp.Highly important work on shipbuilding showing all facets of this trade, with 208 beautifully contemporary hand coloured plates. It is also one of the first extensive flag books. The treatise was one of the most used sea manuals at the time, but today is very rare, especially in such fine contemporary colouring. Although there are very few copies of it left as is (we have only been able to trace three other copies in sales records and five in libraries), most of them lack the third volume. The present copy, however, is complete.Niewe Hollandse scheeps-bouw is an essential primary source for the terminology and practice of shipbuilding in the Dutch Golden Age. It details everything one would need to know about ships, shipbuilding, rigging and maritime flags. The first plate gives a very detailed image of a three-masted ship (including the parts under water) and its rigging, with more than 150 elements keyed with letters or numbers to the list on pages 4 to 8. The second volume contains multiple double-page plates with cross sections of various parts of a ship, as well as plates depicting the tools of the trade, which helps one understand the ship-building process. It also contains a short section on compasses and navigation. The majority of the plates, however, show maritime flags. In fact, both the second and third volume were added because the first was missing a number of flags. The section of flags, spread out across all three volumes, is very extensive. It includes the flags of numerous cities and countries across the world, as well as signal flags.Carel or Carolus Allard (1648-1709) was a Dutch publisher and engraver. He is primarily known for his maps and atlases. He not only published the present work, but also wrote it and most likely engraved all the plates. The first and second volume of the work were first published in 1695. The present copy is the second edition, extended with the supplementary third volume published in 1705. The work was later also translated into Russian (1708) and French (1719).The title page is slightly browned and has been reinforced along the upper margin, the title page and first leaf have both been reattached with a strip of paper in the inner margin, plate 29 of volume 1 has been restored in the lower outer corner, without affecting the image. Overall in excellent condition.l Cat. [1], [1 blank], [41], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank] pp.Limited edition - no. 84 of 100 - of a remarkable early 20th-century illustrative work by the renowned Dutch artist and illustrator of children's books Nelly Bodenheim. The present work contains the short rhymes (verses) by Lizzy Ansingh together with the striking colourful and humoristic illustrations of anthropomorphic fruits, nuts, and vegetables - including lemons, grapes, a pear, radishes, a red pepper, almonds, blackberries, apricots, cherries, and a leek.Johanna Cornelia Hermana (Nelly) Bodenheim (1874-1951) was, among other pursuits, a popular book illustrator and designer of costumes for stage performances in the Netherlands in the early twentieth century. Like in the present work, she often teamed up with Maria Elisabeth Georgina (Lizzy) Ansingh (1875-1959), a Dutch painter. Together, they were part of a group of women artists called the "Amsterdamse Joffers", who met weekly in Amsterdam at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. They supported each other in their (successful) professional careers as artists and most of them were students of and/or affiliated with the renowned Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts). The present work is beautifully illustrated with hand-coloured lithographs designed by Bodenheim, the verses by Ansingh are written in decorative, ornamental script. While the work is by definition rare, as it is a limited edition - WorldCat records only 4 copies that are held institutionally (3 in the Netherlands and 1 in the USA) and only very rarely appears on the market (Rarebookhub finds only 5 records for the last 100 years).Signed in black on the recto of the final leaf before the blank flyleaf by the illustrator: "N. Bodenheim". The boards are slightly browned and stained. Otherwise in very good condition.l Cotsen, 20th century, 488; Heimeriks and Van Toorn, De hele Bibelebontse berg, p. 563; WorldCat 1340486616 (4 copies).

Parts 1 to 4 cover the four Algerian provinces: Alger, Oran, Bone and Constantine, while part 5 is subdivided into ethnic groups (Jews, Turks, Moors, Berbers and some of the nomadic peoples), coins and flora, with the plants arranged according to Jussieu's system. The 133 beautifully executed lithographed plates also show city views, landscapes, portraits, costumes, scenes from daily life with people from a wide variety of professions and various layers of society, etc. They give a lively and realistic portrait of a country in which many different peoples and cultures coexist. They also show Algeria part way through its gradual conquest by France in the years 1830 to 1848, capturing and preserving images of both the survivals from hundreds of years as an Ottoman state and the early interactions with European society. With 2 oval owner's stamps on the general title-page erased, leaving 2 small blank areas in the chromolithographed background pattern, the first botanical plate severely browned, several plates slightly foxed and a couple more seriously. The binding has some small scuffs at the corners and small cracks at the end of some hinges, and the front hinge of volume 3 has some restorations, but the binding is still good. 24 pp.Only copy located of a memento book for the occasion of the marriage of Silvestro Michele Arnolfini and Beatrice Luisa Bernardini, both from noble families that had been prominent in Lucca since the 16th century. The present copy is bound in red velvet with gold and silver embroidery and brocade paper endpapers, no doubt for the bride and groom. The text is a dramatic composition in verse to be sung at the wedding, with a 4-page introduction where the priest-author speaks of music and poetry, but also takes the opportunity to provide moral advice while flattering the bride and groom. Very slightly and evenly browned and with minor wear to the corners of the binding, with the book and binding in very good condition. An extremely rare memento of the 1767 marriage of a noble couple in Lucca, giving us a view of attitudes toward and social circumstances of marriage, in an emblematic red velvet binding, embroidered in silver and gold.l Memorie e documenti per servire all' istoria del Ducato di Lucca, X (1831), p. 233, note 2; Cesare Lucchesini, Opere editie e inedite, XX (1834), p. 38 & note 60 (based on the 1831 Memorie); not in ICCU; KVK; WorldCat.

[1 blank], [24] ll.Limited edition - no. 1 of 7 - of the rarer portfolio edition of a remarkable early 20th-century illustrative work by the renowned Dutch artist and illustrator of children's books Nelly Bodenheim. The present work contains the short rhymes (verses) by Lizzy Ansingh, together with the strinking colourful and humoristic illustrations of anthropomorphic fruits, nuts, and vegetables - including lemons, grapes, a pear, radishes, a red pepper, almonds, blackberries, apricots, cherries, and a leek.Johanna Cornelia Hermana (Nelly) Bodenheim (1874-1951) was, among other pursuits, a popular book illustrator and designer of costumes for stage performances in the Netherlands in the early twentieth century. Like in the present work, she often teamed up with Maria Elisabeth Georgina (Lizzy) Ansing (1875-1959), a Dutch painter. Together they were part of a group of women artists called the "Amsterdamse Joffers", who met weekly in Amsterdam at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. they supported each other in their (successfull) professional careers as artists and most of them were students of and/or affiliated with the renowned Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts). The present work is beautifully illustrated with hand-coloured lithographs designed by Bodenheim, the verses by Ansignh are written in decorative, ornamental script in varying styles. While the work is by definition rare, as it is a limited edition, this edition is even rarer as it presents the 22 plates loose in a portfolio - of which only 7 copies exist. Additionally, WorldCat records only 4 copies of this title (mainly the book form, of which 100 copies were made) that are held institutionally (3 in the Netherlands and 1 in the USA) and it only very rarely appears on the market (Rarebookhub finds only 5 records for the last 100 years). All plates, including the title-page and the "colophon" are signed by Nelly Bodenheim (all except the "colophon" are only initials instead of her full name). The cloth around the spine of the portfolio shows signs of wear and the colour has faded slightly, the boards and the first blank leaf are slightly browned, otherwise internally fine and clean. Overall in very good condition.l Cotsen 20th century, 488; WorldCat 1340486616 (4 copies)
