1770 1st/1st Gospel Magazine Rare Female Publisher
London, M. Lewis No.1 Pater-Noster-Row. 1770, 1st Edition. No Binding. Book, Mary Lewis, Moravian and Independent, was a bookseller/printer in business with her husband, son-in-law, and daughter at 1 Paternoster Row, 1756-91. Upon the death of her husband, John Lewis, in 1754, Mary Lewis took over his printing business and bookshop at 1 Paternoster Row, only a short distance from Joseph Johnson's bookshop in St. Paul's Courtyard. Though Ian Maxted describes her as 'Printer to the Moravians' (she was the exclusive London publisher of the works of the Moravian evangelist, John Cennick), Lewis was more likely a Calvinistic Methodist and later an Independent, her evangelical Calvinism being shared by her Particular Baptist friends, Joseph and Martha Gurney. Joseph collaborated with Mary Lewis on several publications in the 1760s and '70s, including the popular Gospel Magazine. This issue, #52, April, 1790. 1st/1st, nice condition . Interesting content, including poetry, divine allegories, biographies, parables explained, much more. Woodcut ornaments. 56pp. The Gospel Magazine is a Calvinist, Evangelical Christian magazine from the United Kingdom, and is one of the longest running of such periodicals, having been founded in 1766. Most of the editors have been Anglicans. It is currently published bi-monthly. Articles this issue include: The Experience of a True Christi; Copy of a Letter Late Sent to a Lady; etc. The Gospel-magazine, or Spiritual Library is designed to promote scriptural religion Light toning and brown spotting, trace wear. Approaches FINE cond. Approx. 5 x 8". 56pp. Good.

[ Gibson, Edward ]
The Bishop of London's Three Pastoral Letters To The People Of His Diocese ; Particularly To Those Of The Two Great Cities Of London And Westminster, In Defence Of The Gospel Revelation, And By Way Of Preservative Against The Late Writings In Favour Of Infidelity
printed for S Buckley in Amen Corner, 1732, 1st edition. Full panelled calf, G+. [vi]+350pp, engraved devices on tp & after the last page of text, headpieces, old worm holes in the bottom margin throughout which very occasionally reach the printed text but with the meaning clear, hinges cracked, and spine ends rubbed. ESTCT 85806. Hardback , no dustjacket.
¶ A collected edition of three works attacking what Edmund Gibson [ 1669 - 1748 ] Bishop of London, saw as a rise in 'Profaneness and Impiety' in the people of London. Gibson believed this was caused by an increase in books which attacked Christianity, so his answer was to write three letters to the people of London, containing 'Rules and Cautions' designed to strengthen the faith of 'sincere and unprejudic'd Christians' and to preserve them 'from these dangerous Infections'. Individually they were published in large amounts ( a total of 74000 copies of the first 3 were printed ) but this collected edition had a print run of just 3000 copies.

An Elegy on the Death of Mr. Alexander Kilham, Minnister of the Gospel; Who departed this Life at Nottingham, on Tuesday, 20th of December, 1798.
[?Nottingham] Printed n the Year, 1799. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 217 x 138 mms, pp. 10, disbound. "Alexander Kilham, Minister of the Gospel (1762-1798) was a radical Wesleyan itinerant minister who eventually founded the Methodist New Connexion. Kilham became a local preacher in 1782 and acted as assistant to R.C. Brackenbury in the Channel Islands. By 1785 he had met John Wesley and become an itinerant preacher. Following Wesley's death, Kilham became involved in the various debates about Methodism and its future. He was more radical than many of his Methodist contemporaries and advocated the formal separation of Methodism from the Anglican Church. He made enemies among the Methodist establishment and was expelled from the Methodist Church in 1796." Wesley Heritage website The only physical copy that I have located is in the BL, although there might be one in the National Library of Australia.
