79, [1]; 127, [1]; 76, [4] pp.Rare official acts of the only three synods held in the city of Malines, in 1570, 1607 and 1609, published by Christoffel Plantin (in 1571) and his son-in-law Jan Moretus (in 1608 & 1609), who succeeded to his Antwerp printing and publishing office. The first work contains the acts of the provincial synod held in Malines from 11 June to 14 July 1570, the first 8vo edition, published by Christoffel Plantin, copies of which still must have been in stock as late as 1609. The colophon states that the book was printed by Christoffel Plantin on 15 December 1570.The second work, acts of the 1607 synod, must have sold better, since it appears here in its second edition. At the end it includes a “Placcaet ende ordinancie” in Dutch (pp. 113-127), by the Archduke and Archduchess Albert and Isabel, warning their subjects to observe the decrees of the Malines synod, and summing up the most important church-resolutions in 30 articles in Dutch. [4], 21, [1] pp.First edition of this sumptuous work on Muslim Córdoba and Granada from the collection of Baron James de Rothschild (1792-1868), founder of the French branch of the Rothschilds. The monumental volume is an impressive work on the art and architecture of Muslim Spain. It contains a total of 103 striking plates, including the additional plates usually found only in Bohn's reissue published ca. 1830. The first plates show the Mosque at Córdoba, followed by a view of the bridge of Córdoba, while the remainer of the work is devoted to the extraordinary complex of the Alhambra. It contains scenic as well as architectural views, several plans and details of the ornaments, inscriptions and other decorations. As the introduction states, this work was published to "enable the reader to form an accurate estimate of the very high state of excellence to which the Spanish Arabs attained in the Fine Arts, while the rest of Europe was overwhelmed with ignorance and barbarism". It was completed posthumously from the drawings of the Irish architect James Cavanah Murphy (1760-1814), who visited the Alhambra and the Mosque at Córdoba in 1802. Some of the plates were based on engravings from the 1780 "Antigüedades árabes de España", although Murphy had clearly seen and redrawn their subjects.Born in Frankfurt under the Holy Roman Empire, James de Rothschild initially moved to Paris to aid in his brother Nathan Mayer Rothschild's business there; shortly, he established himself and his family at the heart of France's industrial revolution, and charted a steady course through the upheavals of 19th century French politics. Elevated to the status of Baron, his interest in art was genuine, and his collection well-respected.Provenance:From the collection of the banker James Mayer Rothschild (1792-1868), founder of the French branch of the prominent Rothschild family (armorial roundel bookplate and label of the Château de Ferrières to front pastedown).Gentle exterior wear, and some foxing throughout. NETANYAHU, BENZION
The Marranos of Spain: From the Late 14th to the Early 16th Century, According to Contemporary Hebrew Sources, Third Edition, updated and expanded. ISBN 9780801485688
Ithaca and London, Cornell University Press, 1999. 302 pp. Pen underlining on backcover and pencil annotations in a few pages. Paperback. The author, one of the world's foremost medievalists, has made a lifelong project of studying the historical evolution of Marranism and seeking to ascertain the genesis of the Spanish Inquisition. In this seminal work, which opened an ongoing debate on the nature of conversion and belief in late medieval Spain, Netanyahu analyzes evidence on the Marranos contained in the Hebrew sources. For this new edition, the author has updated the book and added an Afterword in which he considers some of the scholarly reactions to the work since the publication of the first edition in 1966. [25] ll.Very rare first and only edition of a “memorial” addressed to the king, Philip III of Spain. Cosme Novella was initially denied permission to practice the profession of pharmacist in the apothecary of his father-in-law who had recently passed away. During the inspections by the “Colegio de Boticarios” (College of apothecaries) they had found deficiencies in the operation of the apothecary, but Novella was finally admitted after intervention of a municipal jury. In 1601 he was appointed as inspector to the pharmacy of the Hospital Real y General, where he found serious deficiencies in their preparations of medicines. This angered the management of the hospital, who held a high position in the College of apothecaries. The College restarted their inspections of Novella’s business and closed his store. The dispute then grew to a bigger scale, involving the royal chapter of pharmacists and physicians. In the present “memorial” Novella presents his case to the King. The royal sentence would in the end be in favour of Novella and his apothecary would eventually be reopened again. With manuscript note on title-page. Some faint waterstains, lacking the last leaf with the colophon, two tiny tears in the fore-edge margins and the paste-downs detached from the boards, separating the bookblock from its binding. [1 blank], [36], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], [24], [1 blank], [6], [1 blank], [1], [4 blank], [1], [13 blank] ll.An exceptional album with fine views of Sevilla, Granada, Cordoba, San Sebastian, and many more. The photographer Jean Laurent was born in France, but opened a photo studio in Madrid in 1856. In 1858, the Spanish government commissioned him to photograph the construction of the railroad line from Madrid to Alicante. The results were published and exhibited in many places, which brought him considerable success. From 1861-68, Laurent held the title of "Fotógrafo de S. M. la Reina" and produced photos of members of the Spanish royal family. His photo studio in Madrid became one of the best-known from his time, which allowed him to open gallery in Paris, where he exhibited and sold premium-quality prints from his work in Spain. Although he was interested in industrialisation and intended to convey the image of a modern and economically flourishing country, his photographs of the more picturesque aspects of Spain became more popular. The present album contains 34 views of Western Islamic architectural structures and a large 4-part folding panorama of the Alhambra and Granada. Furthermore, it contains two examples of photographs on leptographic paper, a collodio-chloride printing paper which was sold ready to use. Its manufacture was perfected by Laurent in collaboration with Martínez-Sánchez in 1866.With some slight signs of wear around the spine and the corners of the boards, the panorama views are mounted on grey cloth which is somewhat foxed (not affecting the actual photograph), the album leaves are very slightly browned. Overall in very good condition.l Hannavy, Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography II, 829/830.
