Bath , Printed and Sold by J. Browne; Crosby and Letterman, 1802. Leather. An early edition of this entertaining biography of Bamfylde-Moore Carew. An early edition of this work, originally published in 1745. Tracing the life, travels, and adventures of Bampfylde-Moore Carew, an English rogue, vagabond, and impostor of the eighteenth century. He was the self-proclaimed King of Beggars. A great success, this work went through numerous editions as books and chapbooks of this exciting and entertaining historical account. It is difficult to ascertain the validity of the contents of this volume, as some of the stories are too fantastic or literary. The book states that the contents were penned by Carew himself, however it is suggested it being authored by Robert Goadby. Including a canting dictionary to the rear with the language used by mendicants  Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved portrait of Carew. In a full calf biding. Externally generally sound with shelf wear and considerable rubbing to the boards and spine. Front board is loose but present. With Major Will Ayling library bookplate to the front pastedown. Undated previous ownership inscription Charles E Brown, possibly a commercial aviation photographer for the United Kingdom bearing the same name living 1896-1892. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally very clean throughout. Illustrated with a frontispiece engraved portrait of Carew. Good Only . Ill.: Not Stated. Good Only .

Also A Distinct and Practical Account of The several Branches of the Revenue called the Customs. With an Appendix, containing an Abstract of all the Laws now in force relative to the Customs. The whole continued to the End of the Session of 9. Geo. III.
London: Printed for J. Nourse..., 1770. FIRST EDITION. 4to, pp. [iv], ix [x Advertisement], [ii], 228, [ii], 304 [305 - 307 Contents, 308 Errata], 39 [40 blank], recently rebound in quarter calf, raised bands between gilt rules, morocco label, marbled boards; ex-library, with perforations in title-page, library stamp across lower edge, small corner torn from top corner of title-page, several leaves closely trimmed, with occasional loss of page number at top of page. A copy of this work was in Adam Smith's library (Mizuta 111), but he makes no specific reference to it in The Wealth of Nations. It is an impressive collection of data, and he pays tribute in the Preface to the work of his predecessors, Henry Saxby (The British Customs, 1759; Mizuta 1492) and Henry Crouch (A Complete View of the British Customs, 1738; Mizuta 440a). He is becomingly modest about the quality of his work, acknowledging only its quantity: "the Editor has gone through a laborious and difficult Task; in its Nature complex; abounding with Objects as well important as minute, demanding Accuracy and Precision in every Line. The Reward which Authors in general propose to themselves, he cannot hope for; as the Work, upon Inspection, will appear to be only the Result of Drudgery; and Drudgery must not aspire to Praise." But without drudges to precede them, would we have geniuses? Goldsmiths 10661. Kress 6708. ESTC locates 30 copies, of which at least 13 do not have the Appendix, which is present in the above copy (last 39 pages).

Text is continuous despite pagination and signatures. Text in double columns, with printed marginalia. With bibliographical references and index.’ Cornelis de Bruijn (also spelled Cornelius de Bruyn, pronounced [d’ 'brœy’n]; 1652 – 1726/7) Dutch artist and traveler. He made two large tours and published illustrated books with his observations of people, buildings, plants and animals. ‘... De Bruin’s travel account does not provide major new insights into Persian society, life, and customs, but it is a straightforward, thorough, and balanced account, without the elements of fantasy that mar most other works by contemporary travelers to Persia, particularly in their discussions of Persepolis ...’ Bibliotheca Irania. In 1701 he headed for Archangelsk. During his second tour he visited the Samoyeds in northern Russia. In Moscow he became acquainted with emperor Peter the Great painting his nieces, the paintings being sent to possible candidates for marriage. In late April 1703, De Brujin left Moscow along with the party of Armenian merchants from Isfahan, together they sailed down the Moscow River, the Oka and the Volga, eventually reaching Astrakhan. Thanks to his short stopover in Nizhny Novgorod during the Easter holidays, we now have his description of that major center of the Russian Volga trade as it existed in 1703, with its Kremlin, stone churches, and a lively bar (kabak) scene. Leaving the borders of the Russian state, de Brujin arrived to Persia, where he made drawings of towns like Isfahan and Persepolis (1704–1705). He continued to Java and returned to Persia, Russia, and ultimately the Netherlands. His drawings of Persepolis, caused a sensation, for a century, they were the best prints available to western scholars.

Jefferson is considered to be a pioneer of scientific paleontology research in North America.
