Sudan Government. Contract for the Construction of a Dam and Subsidiary Works at Makwar on the Blue Nile, and the Construction of Irrigation Canals and Subsidiary Works for the Gezira Irrigation Scheme
London, Burrup, Mathieson & Sprague, 1922. First edition. Cloth. The very scarce contract made between the Sudan Government and the engineers employed to construct the Sennar Dam on the Blue Nile, revealing fascinating insights into the irrigation techniques of the day. A fascinating and very scarce publication from the Sudan Government detailing the contract signed on the 17th October 1922 between Sir Edgar Edwin Bernard, Financial Secretary of the Sudan Government, and the contractors - S. Peason and Sons - employed to construct a dam on the Blue Nile. The Sennar Dam is an irrigation dam on the Blue Nile designed by Scottish engineer Sir Murdoch MacDonald, and completed in 1925. This contract contains information on 'specification, schedule of prices, and other schedules and bond', along with a discussion of methods for the settlement of disputes, canalization, valuation of materials, sanitary and health services, and materials. This dam was a key aspect of the Gezira Scheme, one of the world's largest irrigation projects, started by the British while the area was governed as a part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. It involves water from the Blue Nile being distributed through canals and ditches to tenant farms lying between the Blue and White Nile rivers, for the purposes of growing cotton. From the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan, and with his contemporary inscription to the head of the front wraps, dated 1923. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding, with paper covered boards. Head of front joint starting, with board holding firm. Contemporary inscription to head of front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Good . Ill.: None. Good .

(Arabic text).First edition of a collection of proverbs written by Abu al Qasim Mahmoud ibn Omar al-Zamakhshari (1074-1143), a medieval Muslim theologian, linguist, poet and interpreter of the Quran from a region in Central Asia, present-day southwest Turkmenistan, in the original Arabic with a German translation. He was nicknamed “Jar Allah” (God's neighbour) and is best known for his work Al-Kashshaf, an interpretation and linguistic analysis of Quranic expressions. Appointed head of the ‘fleet of the Arabian and Persian sea’ in 1506, Albuquerque resolved to conquer the island of Hormuz, a great international market; the conquest would permit control of an important commercial route, while Hormoz’s treasure would provide the sums necessary to maintain Portuguese forces in the Indian Ocean" (Encyclopaedia Iranica). The first volume contains his first and second visits to India and the successful attack on Hormuz. "In AD 1507, the balance of power and the ancient trading patterns of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf were permanently altered by the dramatic arrival of the Portuguese, under the ruthless command of Alfonso de Albuquerque [...] The famously wealthy kingdom of Hormuz, which controlled all the shipping lanes of the Gulf and also a significant slice of the Indian Ocean trade, was along with Aden and Malacca, a key target [...] The pearls of the region, and in particularly those of Bahrain, were already recognized as a chief objective. Prior to the conquest of Hormuz, Albuquerque sent a letter to his sovereign, King Manuel I, stating the following: ‘Bahrain is rich and profitable; its Fishery of Pearls is easy to take over and improve. Once Hormuz is captured, Bahrain would be acquired and what is in the Sea of Persia’" (Carter, Sea of Pearls). The book was first published in 1557, compiled by the Captain’s son Bráz de Albuquerque (who, after the death of his father, assumed the name of Afonso) from the dispatches forwarded to King Dom Emmanuel. From the collection of the U.S. conservationist Esmond Bradley Martin (1941-2018), long a U.N. special envoy for the conservation of rhinoceros. Some worming to the spines with loss to the foot of vol 4; minor worming to margins of vols. 1 and 2.
