A comprehensive bibliography of the works relating to English topography from library of John Spalding, signed by Spalding to the frontispieces in Volume I and IV. A fascinating and comprehensive bibliography of the works relating to British topography from the library of John Tricks Spalding, a nineteenth and twentieth century silk mercer and linen draper. Spalding also served as Mayor of Nottingham from 1901 to 1908.Complete in five volumes. Privately printed in Exeter by James G. Commin, where Spalding was born and grew up. Containing a frontispiece portrait to Volume I and Volume IV, and signed by Spalding to both. This set was previously housed in the Nottingham Public Libraries, and has been rebound in institutional quarter vellum binding with cloth covered boards. Including library stickers to the front pastedowns and front free-endpapers of each volume, and library stickers to the odd page in each volume (see condition report for more detail). A very scarce work. Rebound in quarter vellum with cloth covered boards, in institutional binding from Nottingham Public Libraries. Externally, some shelf wear to the boards and darkening to the spines. Spine labels partially or fully detached and lacking to Volume II and III. A small tear to the spine label of Volume IV. Library stickers to the tail of the spines on each volume. Containing library stickers to the front pastedowns and front free-endpapers of each volume, and library stamps to the half title pages, frontispieces, title pages, the first three pages of each volume, and the odd page throughout. Internally, front hinge strained to Volume V. Remaining binding is firm. Light offsetting to the odd page, which are otherwise bright and clean. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .

The first edition, one of two hundred and fifty copies of the standard paper edition printed. Complete as three volumes bound in one.William Upcott's extensive bibliography relating to volumes published about English topography.This bibliography is an impressive endeavour, and was the standard work on the subject until John P. Anderson's work published in 1881 superseded it. Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volumes I and II.Half-title present to Volume I.Collated, bound without the frontispiece to Volume III, and the half-titles to Volumes I and II. William Upcott was a librarian and antiquary, who initially started his career as a bookseller, before becoming the librarian of the London Institution, a position he held for almost thirty years.From the library of W. A. Foyle at Beeleigh Abbey. William Foyle was the co-founder of Foyles bookshop, founding the leading bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex, which became home to his library, one the largest private libraries in England. Rebound in a full calf binding. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of the spine. Hinges are tender. Internally, firmly bound.
