London, Not Stated, c1876. Leather. A very smartly rebound Zaehnsdorf bound set of Thomas d'Urfey's poems and songs, being a smart facsimile of the original 1719-20 editions. A facsimile reprint of the original 1719-20 editions. The facsimile is undated, though is is believed to be published around 1876. It is also unknown who published this facsimile, as the original publishers, W. Pearson, are stated to the title page. Complete in six volumes. In a signed binding by Zaehnsdorf. This work is a collection of songs and ballads, which was originally written between 1698 and 1720. The six volumes contain over one thousand poems and songs. This work was very popular when it was first published. Some of the songs and poems that appear in these volumes are 'The Star of County Down', 'The Fair Maid of Islington', 'Blow the Candle Out', 'Within a Mile of Edinburgh Town', and more. Volume I with a frontispiece and printer's device to the title page. Written by Thomas d'Urfey, and English writer. He was a composer of plays, songs, jokes, and poetry. He was a good contributor in the development and evolution of the Ballad opera. Prior owner's ink inscription to the reverse of the frontispiece of Volume I. In a signed half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. A few light marks to the spines and boards. A little rubbing to the spines. A small amount of loss to the head of the spine of Volume VI. The odd spot to the fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with only the very odd spot, mostly to the first and last few pages. Prior owner's ink inscription to the reverse of the frontispiece of Volume I. Near Fine . Ill.: None. Including Blythe Jockey, Willy and Marie, Lady's Complaint and many others. James Maidment was born in 1793. Passing the Scottish bar, he became a authority on genealogical cases. Alongside a legal career, Maidment was a collector and antiquarian, publishing works of historical interest. A poet himself, Maidment was also a good friend of the famous Scottish poet Sir Walter Scott. A very scarce work. In a half straight-grained morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing. Front hinge tender. Ink inscriptions to front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright, with just a few instances of foxing. Good .
