Thomas Warton
The History of English Poetry from the Close of the Eleventh to the Commencement of the Eighteenth Century. To Which Are Prefixed Two Dissertations. I. On the Origin of Romantic Fiction in Europe. II. On the Introduction of Learning Into England.
London, J. Dodsley et al, 1775-1781. First edition. Cloth. A lovely complete set of this pioneering literary history from Thomas Warton, comprising first and early editions. Consisting of the second edition of Volume I (1775), the first edition of Volume II (1778) and the first edition of Volume III (1781). A desirable set scarce to find complete in three volumes.   Smartly presented here in a modern library cloth rebinding. Generally acknowledged to be the first narrative English literary history, this series accounts English poetry in the Late Middles Ages and Renaissance, and played a large part in steering British taste towards Romanticism. To the rear of the second volume is an unnumbered 'Emendations and Additions in the First and Second Volume' [81pp]. To the third volume is prefixed a third dissertation on the Gesta Romanorum. Bound together with 'An Index to the History of English Poetry' (1806) to the rear. Written by Thomas Warton, a poet, literary historian and critic who was appointed Poet Laureate in 1785. He was a noted Graveyard Poet, with his most famous poem being 'The Pleasures of Melancholy&apos.  In a modern library cloth rebinding, with gilt text to the spine. Renewed endpapers. Externally, excellent, with minor shelf wear and a few faint marks to the boards. Bookplate from the General Theological Seminary Library in New York and binder's impression to the front pastedowns. With library check-out cards held in pockets fixed to the rear pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with light spotting as is usual with age, and a contemporary ink inscription to each title page. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
