Peffer, 1834..... With engraved title and 113 of 114 copper plates. Plates numbered 1-105 and App. 1- 9. Lacking plate 3... First Latin edition. - Adaptation of the highly impressive and detailed anatomical plates first published by the Dutch surgeon Govard Bidloo (1649-1713). Bidloo had already published his Anatomia Humani Corporis in Amsterdam in 1685; the illustrations were based on drawings by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). Sales, however, were apparently quite slow, and much to Bidloo's displeasure, Cowper (1666-1709) acquired 300 complete sets of the plates from the publisher. He published these, along with a new text, under a new title and under his own name. His own contribution to the pictorial program consisted only of nine additional plates on myology, which he had drawn by Henry Cook (1642–1700) and engraved by Michiel van der Gucht (1660–1725)...References: Choulant 95 - Wellcome II, 401 - cf. Garrison/M. 3851..... OCLC Number / Unique Identifier: 81989571: Notes: Signatures: *² [superscript pi]A-C² A1-3M1 3N(3ll.) Gatherings A-3M are signed as one leaf each. Leaf B1 signed A2 Title page printed in red and black Engraved title vignette The first 105 plates and the added engraved title page, all drawn by Gérard de Lairesse and engraved by Peter and Philip Van Gunst, gave rise to a controversy with Govard Bidloo as to Cowper's use of these plates from Bidloo's 1685 Anatomia humani corporis. The 9 final plates added by Cowper were drawn by Henry Cook and engraved by Michael van der Gucht. See 'Cowper, William' in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and 'Godfried Bidloo' in Choulant Initials; tailpieces. .

The Picasso Project
Paintings, Watercolors, Drawings and Sculpture. A Comprehensive Illustrated Catalogue 1885-1973. Europe at War, 1939-1940. Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged
San Francisco, Calif.: Alan Wofsy Fine Arts, 2013. Recent publications. 2nd edition. 9-1/8 x 12-1/4 inches. 23 x 31 cm. Cloth in dust-jacket. 272 pages. 850 works described and reproduced. 8 color plates. This second edition of Europe at War, 1939-1940 was published in January, 2013. There are now 272 pages as opposed to 248 pages in the first edition of 1998, with 8 new color plates. There are numerous corrections, additions and revisions. Titles are made more descriptive and when a number of works in a series have the same title, they are numbered sequentially, to facilitate referencing a work with the same title in the same chronological series. Some works were inadvertently omitted from the first edition, which had been included in Zervos or in the Musée Picasso catalogues. These are now included. A number of works formerly in the collection of Marie-Thérèse Walter, unknown to Zervos, were also not included in the first edition. These were first described and reproduced in the 1973 exhibition catalogue Une Collection Picasso by the Galerie Jan Krugier in Genève. Some of these have seen been subsequently resold at public auctions and the sales are noted. Many entries have been updated in light of descriptions at public sales at the major auction houses since 1999, as well as from museum exhibition catalogues. The most important auctions were those of the collection of Dora Maar (born Henriette Theodora Markovitch (November 22, 1907 – July 16, 1997), Picasso’s companion from 1936 to 1943. The Maar auctions were held in Paris on October 27, 28 and 29, 1998. The sale of Oct. 27-28 had the title Les Picasso de Dora Maar and the one on Oct. 29 had the title Les Livres de Dora Maar, Autographes et Documents. The sales were conducted by PIASA and J. K. Mathias at the Maison de la Chimie, under the sub-title: Succession de Madame Markovitch. Dora Maar apparently kept the works that Picasso gave her to the end of her life and she had a vast collection. Works from these sales are designated as either Maar Succession or Maar Livres. The Maar Succession sale included numerous small unique mixed media works and paper cut-outs. There are also sculpture and drawings on unusual materials, including bone, terracotta and matchbox lids and bottoms. .
