A colourfully illustrated copy of the 'Subscription Edition' for Robert Smith Surtees' humorous novel, with several hand-coloured plates, and in the publisher's original cloth binding. 'Subscription Edition', printed for subscribers from the plates of the original edition by Bradbury, Agnew & Co. Illustrations include a hand-coloured frontispiece, a coloured title vignette engraving, twelve hand-coloured plates, nineteen full-page illustrations, and fifty-one in-text illustrations by John Leech (1817-1864). Leech was a British caricaturist and illustrator who contributed many drawings to 'Punch' magazine, and was also the first illustrator for Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol&apos. This is a wonderful copy of Surtees' humorous novel, titled ''Ask Mamma;', or, the Richest Commoner in England. The novel is described by the author as well suited for a lover of 'light' literature, with an uncomplicated plot and 'everyday exaggeration&apos. Contents include 'The Road', 'The Lady's Boudoir', 'The Pringle Correspondence', and 'The Wild Beast Itself&apos. Robert Smith Surtees (1805-1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. His father was Anthony Surtees of Hamsterley Hall, which made him a member of the County Durham family. He is best remembered for creating the figure of Jorrocks, who he first introduced through the comic papers in his self-founded 'New Sporting Magazine&apos. Undated, so dated from identical copies on Jisc.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Minimal bumping to the extremities and spine with light wear along joints. Fading to spine and to the left margin of the front board. Light spots to text block. Offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean throughout, with light age-toning to the pages and the odd spot to the fore edge, which does not affect text. Colour plates are bright and clean. Very Good .
