COCKERELL CR (Introduction)
Engravings from the Ancient Marbles in the British Museum. Part VI. 1830 C. R. Cockerall
London, Printed at W Nicol, Published at the British Museum 1830 vii, 32pp, 24 plates, some folding 31x25, boards with paste-on paper labels End papers slightly browned, very light wear to boards, contents very good. These beautiful engravings are the main part of the Elgin Marbles, removed from the Parthenon and taken to London in the early years of the 19th century by the Earl of Elgin and then purchased by the British Government for the Museum in 1815. Elgin's actions were controversial at the time, with Byron in particular highly critical of what he saw as an act of vandalism, and the campaign to have them restored to Greece continues to this day.
