George Newenham WRIGHT - Thomas ALLOM
France illustrated, exhibiting its landcape scenery, antiquities, military and ecclesiastical architecture
| [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND]

BLAKISTON, THOMAS WRIGHT:
Five Months on the Yang-tsze; with a Narrative of the Exploration of its Upper Waters, and Notices of the Present Rebellions in China. London, J. Murray, 1862.
. Pp. xiv, (ii), 380. With frontispiece, fifteen wood-engraved plates, two folding maps, seven text illustrations and a page from the author's field book. Occasionally some staining. Publisher's gilt cloth, somewhat faded and extremities lightly rubbed. Bookplate.First edition of a scarce work which for many years was considered the standard on the region including an accurate map of the river from Hankow to Pingshan. Thomas W. Blakiston (1832-91) was a British army officer and naturalist stationed in Canton during the Second Opium War in 1859. He organised an exploration of the middle and upper reaches of the Yang-tze-Kiang in 1861. The mission was to ascend the river as far as Min and then cross the province of Szechuan and reach northwestern India via Tibet and Lhasa. The party reached Pingshan after travelling eighteen hundred miles from Shanghai which was further than any other European explorer before them. This narrative contains interesting information about the country including fauna and flora, and also comments on the politically unstable situation in China at the time. The illustrations are by Alfred Barton. Cordier BS 121. Löwendahl 1263.

Charles D Wright, Thomas Hall, Thomas D. Hill
New Commentary on the Old English 'Prose Solomon and Saturn' and 'Adrian and Ritheus' Dialogues
Brepols, 2024 Hardback, 435 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:8 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503603278.
¶ Summary Who was not born, was buried in his mother's womb, and was baptized after death? Who first spoke with a dog? Why don't stones bear fruit? Who first said the word 'God'? Why is the sea salty? Who built the first monastery? Who was the first doctor? How many species of fish are there? What is the heaviest thing to bear on earth? What creatures are sometimes male and sometimes female? The Old English dialogues The Prose Solomon and Saturn and Adrian and Ritheus, critically edited in 1982 by J. E. Cross and Thomas D. Hill, provide the answers to a trove of curious medieval 'wisdom questions' such as these, drawing on a remarkable range of biblical, apocryphal, patristic, and encyclopaedic lore. This volume (which reprints the texts and translations of the two dialogues from Cross and Hill's edition) both updates and massively supplements the commentary by Cross and Hill, contributing extensive new sources and analogues (many from unpublished medieval Latin question-and-answer texts) and comprehensively reviews the secondary scholarship on the ancient and medieval texts and traditions that inform these Old English sapiential dialogues. It also provides an extended survey of the late antique and early medieval genres of 'curiosity' and 'wisdom' dialogues and florilegia, including their dissemination and influence as well as their social and educational functions. Thomas Wright (ed.), Songs and Ballads with Other Short Poems, Chiefly of the Reign of Philip and Mary Edited from a Manuscript in the Ashmolean Museum
Thomas Wright (ed.)
Songs and Ballads with Other Short Poems, Chiefly of the Reign of Philip and Mary Edited from a Manuscript in the Ashmolean Museum
London, J. B. Nichols and Sons, 1860. First edition. Leather. The first edition of this very scarce collection of poetical works edited by noted antiquarian Thomas Wright. The first edition. Very scarce. Printed for The Roxburghe Club. The Roxburghe Club is an exclusive bibliophilic and publishing society, with notable members including Andrew Lang, Richard Heber and Henry Bradshaw. Thomas Wright was an English antiquarian and writer, who contributed to the Gentleman's Magazine and was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Wright was a renowned scholar, who was perhaps best known for his editing of a number of relics of the Middle Ages. In this very scarce work, Wright edits a collection of poetical works, discovered in the library of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Wright notes that the manuscript the work is based on contains a number of different handwriting styles, although the author or authors of the works are unknown. The work is an important and thorough work which brings to light a previously unknown manuscript. In a quarter morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally generally smart with slight rubbing. A few light marks to the boards. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with marginal age toning and the odd spot, slightly heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
