Book, Written by an American " unordained evangelist, Baptist missionary, explorer, lecturer, photographer and author " it describes the Orthodox Monastery of the Apocalypse and the island as he saw it c.1890. A review in the Spectator Dec 24th.1904 stated " He has a good deal to tell us about modern conditions of life on the island, and he illustrates it with some excellent drawings .He is especially interesting on ecclesiastical affairs. He describes the library, and .. the theological associations of the place. Altogether, he has given us a very readable and, it may be safely added, an instructive volume." It includes interesting contemporary photographs of that period. xii, 195p. frontis. illus. 30 plates of photographs and maps. Name of previous owner on ffep. Decorative cloth cover. Accounts of Pacific missions by American evangelist, explorer, lecturer, photographer, and author William Edgar Geil (1865-1925). Illustrated with 100 full page engravings, technically 94 plates with 6 being double-paged. Geil is best known for his evangelistic travels, which took him to China, the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific Rim and South Seas. He is considered one of the important explorers of his generation. In addition to his writings, Geil lectured extensively with numerous photographs of packed theatres present in this work. Geil married later in life and had no children. His widow, Constance, survived him until the late 1950s. In 1959 his estate was sold at public auction including the contents of his library, which was purchased by a Bucks County book dealer "Gus" Gustafson. He is believed to be the first American to have travelled the entire length of the Ming section of the Great Wall of China.Illustrated with ninety-nine photographic plates, each featuring a number of images. Collated, lacking the plate which should appear between pages 208 and 209, which featured three images.A fascinating account of the author's travels through Shanghai and Burma, with discussion of the Yangtze Gorges, Chinese interpreters, copper mining, and opium.The scarce first UK edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Discolouration to back strip, with bumping to back strip head and tail. Marks to front joint. Front hinge significantly strained, with front free endpaper and frontispiece tenderly held. Small loss to one corner of frontispiece. Rear hinge strained but firmly held.
