Karl Marx
Norton, 2000. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 431. Paradox and passion were the animating spirits of Karl Marx's life, which often reads like a novel by Laurence Sterne or George Eliot. "Imagine Rousseau, Voltaire, and Hegel fused into one person, " said a contemporary, "and you have Dr. Marx." In this stunning book, the first major biography of Marx since the end of the Cold War, Francis Wheen gives us not a socialist ogre but a fascinating, ultimately humane man. Marx's marriage to Jenny von West-phalen, whose devotion was tested by decades of poverty and exile, is as affecting a love story offered by history, while his friendship with Friedrich Engels is by turns hilarious and inspiring. Wheen does not, however, shy away from Marx's work. Was he, as his detractors have claimed, a self-hating Jew? What did Marx really mean by his famous line, "Religion is the opiate of the masses"? Is Capital deserving of the ridicule with which modern-day economists have dismissed it?Marx lived both at the center and on the fringes of his age. He also changed the world. With Karl Marx, Francis Wheen has written a hugely entertaining biography of one of history's most unforgettable players. ISBN: 9780393049237. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Marx's Das Kapital
Atlantic, 2006. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 130. First published in 1867, 'Das Kapital' was an original criticism of the capitalist world. Its ideas would alter the course of history and affect the lives of millions. But, as Wheen explains, 'Das Kapital' is in no way a dry economic tome. ISBN: 9781843544005. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

Strange Days Indeed
Fourth Estate, 2009. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 344. "Strange Days Indeed tells the story of the decade that a young Francis Wheen walked into having pronounced he was dropping out to join the alternative society. Instead of the optimistic dreams of the Sixties he found a world on the verge of a collective nervous breakdown, huddled over candles waiting for the next terrorist bomb, kidnapping or food shortage warning." "Whether it was Nixon's demented behaviour in the White House, Harold Wilson's insistence that 'they' (whoever 'they' were) were out to get him, or the trial of Rupert Bear, it is a story almost too fantastical to be true. With his acute sense of the absurd, Francis Wheen slices through the pungent melange of mistrust and conspiratorial fever to expose the sickly form of a decade in which nations were brought to a sclerotic halt by power cults, military coups, economic anarchy and the arrival of Uri Geller." -Book Jacket.
