Betye Saar : Heart of a Wanderer
Boston, MA, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, 2023. Hardcover. Purple cloth-bound boards with blue text and circular cut-out revealed color illustration on front page behind cover. 212 pp. Features color illustrations. Betye Saar (b. 1926) is an artist whose assemblages tell visual stories and convey political messages. A figure of the Black Arts Movement in the 1970s, she works with found objects, many of which she gathers on her travels to explore themes like symbolic mysticism, feminism, racism, and Eurocentric chauvinism. This volume examines Saar's creative process, her trips around the world, and the ways in which her artworks engage with global histories of travel and forced migration. This illustrated book draws on interviews with Saar and the companions who accompanied her in her travels across four continents over several decades. Essays contextualize Saar's journeys within her broader life and career, as well as how her practice fits into broader traditions, such as scrapbooking, in African American visual culture. In addition to providing this context, this book explores how Saar's assemblage practice both echoes and provides a counterpoint to the collecting practices of Gilded Age American art collectors like Isabella Stewart Gardner. Featuring previously unpublished material, including almost thirty travel sketchbooks and two dozen finished assemblages, this book offers a timely social history of the impact of travel on the African American experience. Williams, Stephanie Sparling
Speaking out of Turn: Lorraine O'Grandy and the Art of Language
Berkeley, California, University of California Press, 2021. Hardcover. Octavo Hardcover with jacket. xv, 228 pages, 16 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations (some color) ; 26 cm. "Speaking Out of Turn is the first monograph dedicated to the forty-year oeuvre of feminist conceptual artist Lorraine O'Grady. Examining O'Grady's use of language, both written and spoken, Stephanie Sparling Williams charts the artist's strategic use of direct address--the dialectic posture her art takes in relationship to its viewers--to trouble the field of vision and claim a voice in the late 1970s to 1990s, when her voice was seen as "out of turn" in the art world. Speaking Out of Turn situates O'Grady's significant contributions within the history of American conceptualism and performance art, while also attending to the work's heightened visibility in the contemporary moment, revealing both the marginalization of O'Grady in the past and an urgent need to revisit her art in the present"--. Near Fine. Lightest touch of wear to the front jacket corner. Otherwise close to new.
