The first attempt at a biography of Scharp after his death in the same year. Scharp [see NNBW vol. IV, c 1203 - 1205], The Hague 1756 - Rotterdam 1828, of english descent, Dutch reformed minister, well known orator and poet, staunch advocate of the monarchy, which brought him into trouble towards the end of the 18th c. when the political situation [ Bataafsche Republiek] forced him to resign his office between 1796 and 1800. Scharp was strict in his religious views, but also tolerant towards others. Frederiks /vd Branden, p. 687: The removed leaf G7 [Pages 109 - 110] contained (according to the index on page 237) Scharp's thoughts on his 40th birthday 'Gedachten op mijn veertigsten verjaardag': It is anybody's guess why the leaf was cut out, but maybe the reader found the words of such value and / or comfort, that he decided to carry the leaf with him.
