Volume II, a8, A-Y8, Z7.The Villani 'Cronica' is a fourteenth century history of Florence, detailing the history of the city year by year. This history was a milestone achievement in the history of European chronicles.'Cronica' tells the lavish historical story of the city of Florence, as it rose to a rich and powerful position to become an important centre of Italian culture.Villani was inspired to write 'Cronica' after the idea came to him after attending the first Jubilee in the city of Rome, in 1300. After this trip he felt that Rome's historical achievements were well documented, and he wished to lay out his on history on the origins on Florence.This is considered to be the first work that introduces the use of statistics as a positive element in history.The 'Cronica' was originally started by the banker Giovanni Villani, and was continued by his brother after his death. In Firenze, Nella Stamperia de' Giunti, 1581 e 1596, due opere in un volume in-4to (cm. 20,5 x 14,5), legatura coeva o poco posteriore in piena pergamena molle con unghie, titoli al dorso di mano antica, stupendi tagli cesellati e dipinti, pp. (32), 560, (44) con vignetta tipografica al frontespizo, numerosi capolettere animati e altre decorazioni xilografiche, registro con grande giglio giuntino + (16), 190, (14) con piccolo giglio al frontespizio e al colophon, capolettere animati e piccoli fregi in xilografia. Pregiata edizione, prima fiorentina, delle Istorie di Matteo Villani, pubblicate per la prima volta a Venezia nel 1562: "I Giunti, nell'Avvertimento, che sta dopo la dedicatoria, dicono di avere notabilmente migliorata ed accresciuta questa edizione per opera del loro amicissimo Giuliano de' Ricci, possessore d'un Codice, scritto l'anno 1374". "Li ultimi tre libri", che completano l'opera di Matteo Villani, furono invece pubblicati per la prima volta nel 1577, e quest'edizione del 1596 ne costituisce l'esatta ristampa. Compare qui la giunta di Filippo (costituita dagli ultimi 42 capitoli dell'undicesimo e ultimo libro), annunciata sul frontespizio della prima opera, ma poi non presente. Piccole mancanze perimetrali alla legatura, specie all'unghiatura del piatto posteriore; difetti con una piccola mancanza al frontespizio, senza perdita di testo per cancellazione antica di firma d'appartenenza; bruniture ad alcune carte e lievi fioriture sparse. Nel complesso, volume molto ben conservato, solido, genuino e completo, impreziosito dai pregevoli tagli cesellati e dipinti. Gamba, 1029-1030.
