The first title in later blue cloth, the second in recent boards with printed paper label on the front board. = A rare ensemble of the two publications on the Alert voyage, together being all zoological results published. It is very rare to find the 1884 book together with the 1881 publication from the Proceedings of the Zoological Society. This article gives the results of the investigations that were carried out in the Magellan strait and Patagonia, regions which were not covered in the 1884 work. This 1884 title deals with the surveys around and on Pacific and Indian Ocean islands. Contains: Summary of the voyage by R.W. Coppinger, Mammalia by O. Thomas (this section describes skulls of Torres Straits and Banks Islanders), Aves by Sharpe, reptiles, batrachians and Pisces by Guenther, molluscs by E.A. Smith. (83, 22, 23 pp., and 4, 1, 3 plates), Echinodermata by Bell, crustaceans by Miers, Coleoptera by Waterhouse, Lepidoptera by Butler, Alcyonaria and sponges by Ridley. 54 nice plates in total. The 1884 title is an ex-library copy in new cloth, perforated stamp on title page, stamps on verso of plates. A good copy with some light uniform tanning of text. The second volume, published in the Society's Proceedings bound in recent old style paper boards, old stamp of a Swedish natural history society on first page, this page also somewhat thumbed and soiled. Some dampstaining on first few pages, an occasional foxing spot, a few pencil annotations. A rather good copy. Horn-Schenkling II(3), p. 397; Nissen ZBI, 4755.

Paris, Ecole de Mines, 1832-1866. Two series in four. Oblong folio (40.5 x 22.0 cm) with 758 (of 759? see below) engraved and lithographed plates and maps, of which 29 are hand-coloured geological maps or profiles. Contemporary uniform red cloth. Gilt titles on the spines and front boards. Marbled endpapers. = Rare atlas belonging to this early French mining journal that started as Journal des Mines (1794-1813) and was continued as Annales des Mines. It includes an early geological map of Los Angeles County (1855), a mining map of California (1862), maps of the volcanoes Mount Vesuvius and Etna, and a fine map of the island of Jersey (1851) with seven colours, etc., etc. Other plates show mining equipment, including locomotives, conveyor belts, and metallurgy devices, including ovens. One plate shows the reconstruction of an exploded boiler, with a map of the debris field, and views of damaged buildings, several others depict eruptions of Mount Vesuvius. In this set, nearly all the plates are not folded, in strong contrast to copies where the plates are included in the text volumes, nearly all folded, and often trimmed. Does not include plate VIII in serie III, volume XX [either not published or never bound in; it is described as Carte géologique de la Russie d'Europe, and should contain a "coupe géologique du nord au sud"; however, it is also lacking in the only other copy of série 3 vol. 20 that we have seen, and it is absent too in a digitalized copy on the internet (annales ensmp) The description of this plate in the "Explications des planches" is incomplete, as if the compiler had not seen it either]. Original wrappers bound in. = A volume of one of the world's longest-running and most influential ornithological magazines. Issues from the earlier years, especially, with fine plates by Keulemans, Grönvold and others, are very uncommon and sought-after. The current volume contains works on birds from South America (in two parts) by Chubb, birds of the Canary Islands (in four parts) by Bannerman, and birds from South Annam and Cochin-China by Robinson and Boden Kloss (in two parts); together with a detailed obituary of F. D. Goodman, an illustrated paper on the so-called "White Dodo", etc. The paper on Annam and Cochin-China (Vietnam) birds is especially well-illustrated, figuring many new, peculiar taxa. Original printed wrappers bound in. = A rare volume from the one of the world's longest-running and most influential ornithological magazines. Issues from the earlier years, especially, with fine plates by Keulemans, Grönvold and others, are very uncommon and sought-after. But this 1909 Jubilee volume, with portraits and short biographies of the foremost members of the British Ornithologists' Union, is quite uncommon and sought-after too. It includes a list of all members, including those deceased, up to 1909, and 40 portraits, including the leading ornithologists of their days, such as Henry Eeles Dresser, Thomas Caverhill Jerdon, Osbert Salvin, Philip Lutley Sclater, and Richard Bowdler Sharpe, but also Alfred Russel Wallace, and the explorer John Hanning Speke.
