Philip Toynbee advertised in the agony columns of the national press, asking people who felt they had a genuine grudge against society and their fellow men to contact him. The result was beyond belief. Within a fortnight he received over five hundred replies, ranging from the wholly flippant to the deeply tragic. After much sorting and sifting of confessions Toynbee narrowed the field to eighteen. The range of this "grudge of grievances" is wide, frequently very moving and always entertaining.
