Twenty Years a-Growing
London, Chatto & Windus, 1933. First edition. Cloth. The first UK edition of this autobiography from Irish author Maurice O'Sullivan, with unique memoirs from his time living on the Great Blasket Island. First UK edition. The autobiography of Muiris Ó Súilleabháin, anglicised as Maurice O'Sullivan, an Irish author best remembered for this Irish language memoir of growing up on the Great Blasket Island and in Dingle, County Kerry, off the western coast of Ireland. As one of the last areas of Ireland in which the Irish language and culture had continued unchanged, the Great Blasket Island was a place of enormous interest to those seeking traditional Irish narratives. O'Sullivan was persuaded to write his memoirs by George Thomson, who helped to translate this work into English. Translated by Moya Llewelyn Davies, an Irish Republican activist during the Irish War of Independence and a Gaelic scholar, and George Derwent Thomson, a British classical scholar, Marxist philosopher, and scholar of the Irish language. In the original full green cloth binding. Externally, very smart with fading to the extremities and the odd mark to the cloth. Original price-clipped dust wrapper is sound with sunning to the spine and panel edges with the odd small mark. Light loss to the head and tail of the spine with the odd small closed tear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with minor age toning to the extremities. The odd small mark to the endpapers. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good/Good.

[2], [2 blank] pp.Autograph letter by the New Zealand scientist George Malcolm Thomson, addressed to the French zoologist Alphonse Milne-Edwards. Thomson (1848-1933) was a New Zealand scientist, teacher, educationalist, and politician. He was born in Calcutta, India, and grew up in Scotland before emigrating to New Zealand at the age of 20. Before emigrating, he briefly studied chemistry and botany at the University of Edinburgh. Later in life, as a teacher and scientist in New Zealand, he had a great interest in these and other natural historical subjects. The addressee of the present letter is Alphonse Milne-Edwards (1835-1900), a French zoologist and naturalist and the son of the renowned French zoologist Henri Milne-Edwards. After obtaining a medical degree in 1859, Alphonse started out as the assistant to his father at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. Later in life, he became the director of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle. In his studies, Milne-Edwards mainly focussed on fossil birds and deep-sea exploration, but he wrote numerous works on broader ornithological and other natural historical subjects. In the present letter, Thomson profusely thanks Milne-Edwards for forwarding several papers related to their shared interest in crustaceans, as they were both carcinologists. Thomson references two other French natural scientists and their works: Henri Filhol (1843-1902) and (Charles) Émile Blanchard (1819-1900).Transcription:[p. 1]High School, Dunedin, N.Z.30th Augt. 1882.Sir,I beg to thank you heartily foryour kindness in so promptly replyingto my requests of 12th and 28th April.Your letter of 20th June, accompaniedby the numbers of 'Comptes rendus', containingM. I hope to republish atranslation of these papers in succeedingnumbers of the journal.I had the pleasure of seeingDr. Filhol when he was here in my[p. 2]father's house, and of handing him aconsiderable collection of Crustacea andof dried plants. He then promised tomake me an exchange when he returnedto France, but no doubt he had morepromises of the kind to fulfil than hecould manage.I take the liberty of forwardinga few papers which I have from timeto time read, and shall feel honouredto receive from you at any time com-munications relating to New Zealand.Believe me to remain,Your's faithfully,Geo.
