Sebastian Haffner kreeg wereldwijd erkenning voor zijn geschriften. Vooral zijn dunne maar bijzonder invloedrijke boeken over Hitler en Churchill maakten hem een beroemd man. Zijn werk wordt nog dagelijks door studenten wereldwijd bestudeerd. Maar Haffner was niet alleen een journalist-historicus, hij maakte zijn tijd ook mee, was oog- en oorgetuige. In 1939 vetrok hij in exil naar Groot-Brittannië en bleef vanuit daar een belangrijk opiniemaker over de historie maar ook over onze actuele kijk op de gang van zaken. Uwe Soukup laat in dit opmerkelijke boek zien dat Haffner ook de spindoctor was achter menig politiek debat, en dat hij in zijn polemiek ook vijandschappen opriep. De een noemde hem een overtuigde Europeaan, de ander een patriot, de een beschuldigde hem van communistische sympathieën, de ander noemde hem een reactionair. Dit alles werd veroorzaakt door het verleden dat hij met zich mee droeg: 'Ich bin nun mal Deutscher'. Het boek is vertaald door.
