Ludovico Antonio Muratori (October 21, 1672 January 23, 1750) was an Italian historian, notable as a leading scholar of his age, and for his discovery of the Muratorian fragment, the earliest known list of New Testament books. The first edition of this was published in Venice in 1756. Born to a poor family in Vignola, near Modena, he was first instructed by the Jesuits, studied law, philosophy, and theology at the University of Modena, and was ordained a priest in 1694. The following year, Count Charles Borromeo called him to the college of "Dottori" at the Ambrosian Library in Milan, where he immediately started collecting unedited ancient writings of various kinds. Rebound in a half-vellum binding with marbled boards. Externally, smart. Some rubbing and a few marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, though spotted throughout. Very Good . Ill.: None. He was assisted in writing this volume by autobiographical memoirs written by Muratori himself. From the library of the Travellers Club, with their label to the front paste down, and an ink inscription and stamp to the recto of the front free. Presented to the Travellers Club by George Vivian Esq. Vivian was a topographical artist known for his Spanish landscapes and beautiful depictions of views from Italian gardens. In 1824 during a journey to the Near East he encountered Lord Byron. His extensive library was put up for sale in 1875. In a quarter morocco binding with cloth to the boards.
