(Shakespeare, William)
"First Edition of Hamlet" in Harper's Weekly (January 17, 1857)
New York, Harper's Weekly, 1857. First Edition. 0 pp. Disbound. Volume I, Number 3. Very good in wrappers with light wear to spine, where disbound, and some foxing, otherwise clean and bright with hardly any where. Interesting article about the discovery of the "First Edition of Hamlet" (p. 47) found in a Dublin shop which prints, for the first time, the last few lines of the play, beginning with Fortinbras saying "Where is this bloudy sight?" The passage is quoted in the article herein. This edition matches another rare edition that is missing the last page but contains the first page (not present in the Dublin volume), both supposedly published in 1603. Annoucement is made of a new edition of Shakespeare's works being prepared by Mr. Halliwell (the man who bought the Dublin edition) and Mr. Collier. Also, Southey's sonnet "Winter" appears on p. 37. Also, lengthy travel essay "Modern Naples" with three large illustrations (pp. 40-43); "Original Letter of Thomas Campbell" to C. Patmore, "father of the young poet Coventry Patmore." (p. 47). Also, humorous description by Wm Hazlitt of Wordsworth from a letter of Landor's quoted in "Poets Painted by Each Other." Of more local interest are two articles" "Chat: The New Female Metamorphosis" (p. 35), about women becoming more masculine in apparel, walking the streets of New York City, and "Effect of Literary Occupation Upon the Duration of Life" (p. 34) about the ill effects of the sedentary life on one's health. Very Good.

9789464437539 William Shakespeare 12432, First Folio
William Shakespeare 12432
First Folio
Lars Remer. Hardback. Shakespeare's Plays or Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies by William Shakespeare was first published by Jaggard & Blount in London in 1623. What is now called the First Folio was in fact the first collection of plays written by William Shakespeare. The First Folio is distinguished by an elaborate title page, frontispiece with first-state portrait, complete edition with leaves intact, containing Troilus and Cressida and its prologue, Romeo and Juliet ending on Gg. Roman and italic text types, cursive for headings, various larger romans and cursives in preliminaries. Text in double columns, 66 lines, bold headlines and catchwords, pages box-ruled, woodcut headpieces and tailpieces and initials. The first authorized edition of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare and in terms of editorial theory the closest we have or are likely to have to any final published text authorized by the author, in the sense that it is the published text authorized on the author's death by his friends and closest colleagues, such as John Heminges and Henry Condell, the people who performed his plays on stage. ISBN: 9789464437539. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.

William Shakespeare 12432
The Norton Facsimile the First Folio of Shakespeare - Based on Folios in the Folder Shakespeare Library Collection
W.W. Norton & Company, 1996. Hardcover in cassette. Pp: 968. A full-size photographic facsimile of one of the essential books of English literature and culture that has won the admiration of actors and scholars throughout the world. When it was published in 1968, The Norton Facsimile set a new standard for scholarly accuracy. It was the first facsimile in which every page had been selected from a large number of copies in an attempt to find a clean, clear example with minimal show-through. Even more important, it offered the latest, most corrected state of pages known to vary from copy to copy because of correction at press. Finally, it introduced a standard system of reference, "through line numbering", based on the lines printed in the 1623 edition rather than on the acts, scenes and lines of a modern edition. These improvements, the meticulous work of the great Folio scholar Charlton Hinman made possible by the extensive Folger Library Collection, established The Norton Facsimile as an indispensable volume for book collectors and serious readers of Shakespeare.
