Two volumes in uniform half calf bindings with marbled boards. Eugène Scribe (1791-1861) was a French dramatist and librettist. He is best known for writing 'well-made plays' ('pièces bien faites'), an enduringly popular format, and as the librettist of many highly successful grand operas and 'opéras-comiques&apos. These two volumes are part of the series 'Répertoire du Théatre de Madame', and contain six plays written by Scribe in collaboration with other popular playwrights of the time. Each play is complete with its own half title page, title page and dramatis personae.Volume I comprises: Le Mariage de Raison by Eugène Scribe and Antoine-François Varner La Lune de Miel by Eugène Scribe, Mélesville (Baron Anne-Honoré-Joseph Duveyrier) and Pierre Carmouche Le Mal du Pays by Eugène Scribe and Mélesville (Baron Anne-Honoré-Joseph Duveyrier) Volume II comprises: Le Diplomate by Eugène Scribe and Germain Delavigne Le Plus Beau Jour by Eugène Scribe and Antoine-François Varner La Quarantaine by Eugène Scribe and Édouard-Joseph-Ennemond Mazères In uniform half calf bindings. Lit.: Te Winkel VII, p.382 Hilman 1290; Van Aken II, p.254 De vertaler merkt op dat het Nederlandsche volk aan de lessen en voorbeelden, die hier gegeven worden, den Hemel zij dank, geene behoefte heeft, maar ze kunnen ons wel zoo menige woeling bij onze naburen beter doen begrijpen. Het is wel duidelijk waarop hij, enkele jaren na het begin van de Belgische Opstand, het oog heeft. Eugène Scribe was overigens ook de auteur van 'La muette de Portici', de opera waarvan de vertoning in Brussel in 1830 het begin markeerde van de opstand. Te Winkel spreekt zijn waardering uit voor de geestige en goedgebouwde stukken van Scribe. Al in 1834 schreef Aarnout Drost over 'Bertram en Raton' aan Potgieter dat hij het stuk met onbeschrijfelijk veel genoegen gelezen had.
