Sir Walter Scott, Bart, The Antiquary
Sir Walter Scott, Bart
The Antiquary
Edinburgh, Adam and Charles Black, 1854. Cloth. A Gothic novel by the popular and prolific author and poet, Sir Walter Scott. Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet (15 August 1771 – 21 September 1832) was a prolific Scottish historical novelist and poet popular throughout Europe during his time. In some ways Scott was the first author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers all over Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and (to a lesser extent) his poetry are still read, but he is less popular today than he was at the height of his fame. Nevertheless many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and specifically Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley and The Heart of Midlothian. The Antiquary is one of Scott's Waverley novels and was first published in 1816. The central characters is an amateur historian, archaeologist and collector of items of dubious antiquity. Although the eponymous character, he is not necessarily the hero, as many of the characters around him undergo far more significant journeys or change. Instead, he provides a central figure (and location) for other more exciting characters and events - on which he provides a sardonic commentary. The book is written in the third person so even the narrative does not remain with the antiquary. This is Scott's Gothic novel, redolent with family secrets, stories of hidden treasure and hopeless love, with a mysterious, handsome, young man, benighted aristocracy and a night-time funeral procession to a ruined abbey, no less. But the romance and mystery is counterpoised by some of Scott's more down-to-earth characters, and gritty events. In a full cloth binding with blind embossed cloth boards with gilt title to spine. Externally, a trifle rubbed. There is some wear to the extremities, particularly to the spine which is sunned and chipped to the top and bottom with some loss. Crack to the front joint. Publisher's advertisements to the front and rear paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean, with only some very isolated spotting. There is a closed tear to the title and advertisement page. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
