Elle est devenue alors la Lorraine et a été associée à l'Alsace dans le cadre de l'Alsace-Lorraine. Les Mosellans ont subi l'annexion. Ceux qui ont refusé de devenir Allemands, ont opté pour la France et quitté le pays. La majorité des autres a du s'adapter aux faits accomplis : apprendre l'allemand à l'école et, pour les jeunes gens, porter le casque à pointe dans l'armée du Kaiser. Dans leur coeur ils gardaient le souvenir de la France et vivaient dans l'attente de son retour, tout en bénéficiant des aspects positifs de la présence allemande : législation sociale avancée, urbanisme moderne, progrès économiques, paix civile et religieuse. Pour résister à la germanisation, les Mosellans ont développé leur propre identité, comme le souligne cette formule de l'époque : ´ Français ne peux, Allemand ne veux, Lorrain je suis ». C'était pour eux le moyen de se distinguer des Allemands immigrés qui s'étaient installés dans le pays conquis, principalement à Metz. Du côté allemand, ce que l'on appelait la marche de l'Ouest de l'Empire était un glacis militaire défendu par la place forte de Metz, la plus moderne de toute l'Europe. Cette première annexion a duré près d'une demi-siècle. Elle a laissé des traces dans la législation, un patrimoine de bâtiments publics et privés que l'on redécouvre aujourd'hui et une empreinte sur les mentalités et les comportements.
