Contemporary full calf, spine with five raised bands decorated in gilt and with title label. Binding rubbed, hinges cracked, corners and spine ends chipped. Old ownership signatures on title. (Carl Iserhielm (1681-1748), renowned Swedish book collector, and Mr. Rumpf (CM)).First French edition of this famous work of the Ottoman empire is based mainly on Rycaut's personal experiences. It was originally published in English in 1666/67 but most of that edition was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Sir Paul Rycaut was a British diplomat who served as secretary to the British Ambassador in Constantinople between 1661 and 1667, later being appointed consul in Smyrna (now Izmir). This account describes the Ottoman government and political principals but also contains important information about the Mahometan religion, the naval and land forces of Turkey. The illustrations are mainly costume plates after a book that Ricaut had commissioned from an artist at the bazaar in Constantinople. This narrative became popular, was printed many times and translated into several languages. Cf Atabey 1069. Cf Blackmer 1464. Willems 1872.

Paul RYCAUT
""There was a great deal of controversy at this time about the nature of the Eucharist, and the doctrine of the Orthodox Church seemed to be unclear on this point. Both the Anglican and Roman Churches wanted to be able to claim the support of the Greek Church for their respective dogmas. As a result several works on the Greek Church appeared during the latter part of the 17th century (see also Covel and Smith). Rycaut's work on the Greek Church is significant for the knowledge and sympathy it displays. He was almost alone among his contemporaries in understanding the struggles of the Greeks to maintain their religion in the face of the Turkish and Catholic pressures"" [Leonora Navari]. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND]
