Leipzig, ca. 1831. Blattgröße 26,4 x 19,4 cm, Abbildung 11 x 8 cm. am Rand stockig. Beurnonville wurde, obwohl zum Geistlichen bestimmt, aus Neigung Soldat und machte als Major die Feldzüge von 1779 bis 1781 in Ostindien mit. Ungerechterweise abgesetzt, kam er 1789 nach Frankreich zurück und erhielt zur Entschädigung die Stelle eines Leutnants mit dem Rang als Oberst in der Schweizerkompanie des Grafenb von Artois, schloss sich aber der revolutionären Bewegung an und wurde 1792 als Maréchal de Camp und Adjutant Luckners mit der Organisation der Nordarmee beauftragt. Er kämpfte bei Valmy und verteidigte Lille. Am 8. Februar 1793 wurde er durch Vermittlung der Girondisten Kriegsminister und erwarb sich sogar die Anerkennung der Jakobiner die ihn anfangs hassten. Als ihn Dumouriez für seinen Plan eines Staatsstreichs gewinnen wollte, zeigte er dies dem Nationalkonvent an und wurde am 1. April 1793 mit den vier Konventskommissaren abgesandt, um Dumouriez zu verhaften, der ihn aber mit seinen Begleitern festnehmen ließ und an die Österreicher auslieferte. Nach 33-monatiger Haft in Olmütz wurden sie sämtlich (November 1795) gegen die Herzogin von Angouleme ausgewechselt. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Paris fungierte er zunächst als Adjutant des Kriegsministers Aubert du Bayet. Später erhielt Beurnonville das Kommando der Nordarmee, das er aber 1798 wegen zerrütteter Gesundheit niederlegte, worauf ihn das Direktorium zum Generalinspektor der Infanterie ernannte. 1800 war er außerordentlicher Gesandter in Berlin, 1802 in Madrid. 1804 zum Großoffizier der Ehrenlegion, 1805 zum Senator und 1809 zum Grafen des Reichs (comte d'Empire) erhoben, stimmte er 1814 für Napoleons I. Absetzung und als Mitglied der provisorischen Regierung gegen die Thronerhebung Napoleons II. ernannte ihn daher zum Pair und Staatsminister. Von Napoleon I. geächtet, verweilte er während der Hundert Tage mit Ludwig XVIII. in Gent, wurde 1816 zum Marschall von Frankreich ernannt und nahm 1817 wieder den Titel Marquis an. Er starb am 23. April 1821 in Paris. Sprache: französisch. x.

Exceedingly Rare Carte de Visite of Louis Riel, Sole Indigenous Father of Confederation, and Founder of the Province of Manitoba ; by the Winnipeg-based Photographers, Hall & Lowe, after a portrait by J.H. Noverre

Montréal, Quebec & Winnipeg, Manitoba, Hall and Lowe, Photographers, N.D. [Circa 1870-1873]. Albumen studio portrait of Louis Riel, measuring 8 cm x 6 cm, mounted on stiff boards, measuring 10 cm x 6.5 cm, captioned: “Louis Riel; Compliments of S. Davis & Sons, Montreal; Largest Cigar Manufacturers in the Dominion.” Verso lists "Leading Brands" of tobacco, printed in bright blue ink. Lower-left margin of photograph prominently bears the mark of Hall & Lowe, venerable Winnipeg-based photographers who established a name for themselves on account of their “Indian photos (taken from life), Xmas cards, views of Winnipeg”, [Source: The Manitoba Historical Society]. Our present offering was most likely after a photograph by Montréal-based photographer, J.H. Noverre, taken in the early 1870's; a period of great uncertainty and tumult for the Métis and Riel, personally. Indeed, it witnessed the election of Riel as President of a Provisional Métis government, the accession of the Province of Manitoba into Confederation (referred to then as the Red River Settlement), the execution of Thomas Scott, a vehement Orangeman, on the orders of a Métis court-martial, Riel's election to the House of Commons, and subsequent escape to New York. Remarkably well-preserved; near fine. We note only but two institutional holdings of similar photographs of Riel. The first being housed at the Manitoba Provincial Archives, (see "Louis Riel 1, N5730"), which dates the photograph to 1876; this is most likely incorrect as Riel would partly have been living in the United States at this time, on account of his forced exile, and confronting a myriad of mental health challenges, which saw him admitted to an asylum near Montréal for nearly two years. The second, being a near-identical variant housed at Library and Archives Canada (see Reference No. 4868456), though, in markedly poorer condition. Library and Archives Canadas' holding notably does not bear the distinctive mark of the studios of Hall and Lowe.
