Le Regent Mustel Histoire de Manon Lescaut Et Du Chevalier Des Grieux
Paris, Librairie Nouvelle; Librairie de Garnier Freres, 1856 - 1858. Leather. Two works, bound as one, by Alexandre Dumas fils, and L'Abbe Prevost. 'Manon Lescaut' is a French novel about the Chevalier des Greuix and his lover, Manon Lescaut. The novel follows their affair through moves to Paris and New Orleans. 'La Regent Mustel' is a scarce novel by the prolific author Alexandre Dumas. Alexandre Dumas, fils, 1824 – 1895, was a French author and dramatist. He was the illegitimate son of Alexandre Dumas, père, also a writer and playwright. During 1831 his father legally recognized him and ensured that the young Dumas received the best education possible at the Institution Goubaux and the Collège Bourbon. At that time, the law allowed the elder Dumas to take the child away from his mother. Her agony inspired Dumas fils to write about tragic female characters. In almost all of his writings, he emphasized the moral purpose of literature. It was as dramatist that Dumas was most successful. During 1874, he was admitted to the Académie française and in 1894 he was awarded the Légion d'honneur. Antoine François Prevost, 1697 – 1763, usually known simply as the Abbe Prevost, was a French author and novelist. Prevost was educated at the Jesuit school of Hesdin, and in 1713 became a novice of the order in Paris, pursuing his studies at the same time at the college in La Fleche. At the end of 1716 he left the Jesuits to join the army, but soon tired of military life, and returned to Paris. He joined the learned community of the Benedictines of St Maur. He took his vows at Jumieges in 1721 after a year's novitiate, and in 1726 took priest's orders at St Germer de Flaix. He left the abbey without leave in 1728, and fled to England. He left England for the Netherlands, and it was during this time that Prevost began to publish his works. He was not reconciled with the Benedictines until 1734. In 1735 he was dispensed from residence in a monastery by becoming almoner to the Prince de Conti, and in 1754 obtained the priory of St Georges de Gesnes. He continued to produce novels and translations from the English, and, with the exception of a brief exile spent in Brussels and Frankfurt, he resided for the most part at Chantilly until his death. In the original half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Light wear to the extremities. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with scattered spots. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

Abbe Prevost, Histoire Du Chevalier Des Grieux Et de Manon Lescaut
Abbe Prevost
Histoire Du Chevalier Des Grieux Et de Manon Lescaut
Paris, Editions du Charme, 1942. Paperback. A limited edition of the classic French tale of the Chevalier des Grieux and his lover Manon Lescaut, following them from France, leading a life of luxury in Paris, to a tragic end in Louisiana. A limited edition, numbered number one of thirty-three editions on Japanese Paper. In the original French. "Manon Lescaut" was originally published in 1731, controversial upon its publication, and subsequently banned in France. Despite it being banned, or perhaps because it was banned, the novel became incredibly popular and widely-read. With thirty-three in text watercolours by Jean Driot, with an additional loose plate of one of the illustrations. Jean Driot was a French painter born into a bourgeois family, who had his first watercolour exhibition in 1911 at the Galerie du Roy in Brussels. He published his illustrations in many magazines and books, and also created a lot of popular posters, continuing to exhibit all the while. In this limited edition publication, there were a total of three-thousand and thirty-three copies. Thirty-three were on Japanese Paper, one-hundred and fifty on vellum with illustrations on Japanese Paper, and two-thousand and eighty-five on vellum with cloth and paper from Lana. Collated, complete. In the original publisher"s paperback binding printed on Japanese paper, with a glassine protective cover. Externally, very smart.
