The first edition, first impression, in the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.A wonderful volume presenting the personal correspondences of Booker Prize-winning novelist, poet, essayist and biographer Penelope Fitzgerald, edited by Terence Dooley.From the library of Carmen Callil, an Australian publisher who founded Virago Press in 1973, to "publish books which celebrated women and women's lives, and which would, by so doing, spread the message of women's liberation to the whole population". Virago publish works by new and neglected female authors, such as A. S. Byatt, Daphne du Maurier, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Margaret Atwood, and Angela Carter, all with a distinctive green spine synonymous with Virago.This work features a preface on Fitzgerald's life from A. S. Byatt, a friend and colleague of Callil, who published a number of her works when working at Chatto.Callil has written the dates of Fitzgerald's life ('17.12.1916 to 28.4.2000') to the title page.With pencil underlining and notations by Callil throughout, most concentrated to Byatt's preface. She underlines Byatt's descriptions of Fitzgerald's 'wildly funny wit' and 'wicked sense of humour&apos. Later on in the work, she has underlined a sentence from a 1991 letter from Fitzgerald in which she complains 'I'm dreading Bath as they've put me in the Royal Crescent, but I expect I'll be in the attics&apos.
