Ommanney, in the original dust wrapper and illustrated in colour by Robert Gillmor. The first edition. Also published in the U.S. in the same year. Illustrated by Robert Gillmor with full colour vignettes and full page illustrations. In the publisher's original pictorial hardback with the original unclipped dust wrapper. A very scarce work. This picture book was written by F. D. Ommaney, an English lecturer in Zoology at East London College, and provides information on a variety of Antarctic animals. The work is beautifully illustrated with drawings by Robert Gillmor and covers animals such as the sperm whale, seals and penguins. In the publisher's original pictorial hardback with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally excellent with only slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. The wrap is generally smart with a closed tear to the head of the front, small closed tears, creasing and slight rubbing to the extremities, and minimal spotting to the front. Spotting to the verso. The first edition, first impression of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Francis Downes Ommanney (1903-1980) was a writer and biologist. In this work, Ommanney uses his diverse experience to write of the ocean, including fascinating facts about fish and interesting descriptions of different methods of fishing. He also mentions the problems of intensive farming and the need for conservation of dwindling resources. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition, with very light shelf wear to the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
