The Whole Duty of Man, Laid Down in a Plain and Familiar Way, for the Use of All, But Especially the Meanest Reader. [... ] with Private Devotions for Several Occasions
London, Printed only for John Beecroft, 1771. Leather. Full leather. Xxi, 471 pp. MISSING all contents pages after page 471. Somewhat recently attributed to Richard Allestree, The Whole Duty of Man was first published in 1658, anonymously, expounded on Anglican traditions, in a Protestant devotional form. This includes sections that adopt a sermon-like tone, as well as several sections of prayers. Richard Allestree was an English Royalist churchman, imprisoned briefly for his views. He published several collections of sermons, and served as provost of Eton College. Provenance: large bookplate indicates this was a gift from Henry Hoare, presumably the English banker of the same name. The name Mary Woolridge is handwritten on the decorative half-title, with the date July 10, 1775. FAIR condition, LACKING the aforementioned contents pages at the end. Heavy scuffing, chipping, and flaking to the leather, with the leather split and peeling along the spine hinges. This includes some minor loss of leather, exposing the boards beneath. Minor soiling and staining to the covers. Extremities scuffed, rounded and worn. Front cover tenuously holding on by strings. Small remains of a bookplate present on top of the Henry Hoare plate. Scattered dampstaining and spotting to the text, with a few larger dampstains in the fore edge margins. Minor scattered soiling. Fair .
