Compiled by John Marriot Davenport. The second edition was published in 1888 with addendums and revisions. The author's presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the verso of the front free endpaper, "From the Author, Oct 6th 1868."With two letters tipped in: 1. County Hall, Oxford, 30 November 1872. Dear Colonel ChesterWill you allow me to trespass upon the shores of your knowledge and your indices to ask if you can assist me to the date of the birth of George, Second Earl of Macclesfield. I can nowhere find it. He was President of the Royal Society, and otherwise a distinguished man. He died in 1764; and his father lived, severally, in Soho Square, S. James' Square, and Cavendish Square. I will not have you give yourself trouble; but if you would happen to know where to look for the date of the Earl's birth, or his age at his death, I shall feel obliged. The Earl's father was Lord Chancellor. I trust you are in good health. Yours very truly, John M Davenport. 2. Oxford, 5 December 1872. Dear Colonel Chester, I am exceedingly obliged to you. I ought to pay you a fee, and shall be happy to do so. I am sorry to hear of you having been unwell, but hope you will have no return to the illness. Very sincerely, YoursJohn M Davenport. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart with minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities. The cloth to the head and tail of the spine is slightly rubbed. With two letters from the author to a Colonel Chester tipped in; inscribed by the author to the verso of the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are very clean with only a touch of tone age, as usual. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
