Very good condition The author was impresario of the Max Maretzek Italian Opera Company (sometimes referred to as the Italian Opera Company, the Italian Grand Opera Company, or Academy of Music Opera Company) a touring American opera company that performed throughout the United States from 1849-1878. The first major opera company in Manhattan and one of the first important companies in the United States, it had a long association with the Academy of Music in New York City where it presented an annual season of opera from 1854 until the company's demise in 1878.

French, 1855. 1855. - Octavo, olive green cloth titled with decorations in gilt on the spine & with a vignette of a conductor on a podium stamped in gilt on the spine & in blind within decorative frames on both covers. The covers are rubbed & bumped with the extremities faded. The spine is faded and the head & tail of the spine are chipped with small pieces out. vii & 346 pages & a 14-page illustrated publisher's catalogue, including a 4-page extract from "The Watchman". One page is soiled and there is scattered foxing & light staining throughout. Good.

Moravian-born opera impresario Maretzek was dubbed the "Napoleon" of opera by his friends and followers. Arriving in New York in 1848 as the conductor and manager of the Italian Opera Co. he produced four seasons of Italian opera in his first three years in the city. He presented Adelina Patti for the first time in opera in 1859. Good .
