Engraved titlepage and portrait engraved by (Duflas) bound in in volume I. Uniform contemporary full calf, raised back with gilt decorated compartments and two labels, marbled endpapers, edges painted red, . Bindings with minimal wear, three top turn ins damaged, no library stamps , 18th century engraved ex-libris tipped in on first paste down. Notwithstanding the minor defects mentioned a very attractive and impressive set in very well preserved uniform bindings and with crisps interiors, of one of the last and best editions of this monumental dictionary - encyclopedia. .

Ninth edition, with four volumes bound in two, in its original french form. Listed alphabetically. Featuring an engraved frontispiece by G. V. Gouwen, decorative head and tail pieces and illuminated capitals. Le grand Dictionaire historique, ou le mélange curieux de l'histoire sacrée et profane was Louis Moréri most famous work, and the first of its kind. Pierre Bayle, author of the noted The Historical and Critical Dictionary described Moréri's dictionary, and said of him "The first compilers of dictionaries made many errors, but they deserve a glory of which their successors ought never to deprive them. Moréri has given himself a great deal of trouble, has been useful to everybody, and has sufficient information for many." Complete in two volumes. In original vellum bindings with calf spine labels. Externally, rubbing and handling marks to the boards. Loss and lifting to the back strip of volume two. Front board of volume two is held by the cords only, with rear joint starting. Volume one's front joint is starting. Binding is lifting to the pastedowns. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound with bright pages with the occasional instances of spotting and handling marks, very nice copies given their age. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown of volume two. Good . Ill.: G V Gouwen. Good .

Deux Tomes (complete) bound as 4 volumes in matching full-leather bindings with banded gilt-decorated spines. Volume I (first part of Tome I) has half-title, frontis, title in black and red, dedication to the King, elaborate header and capital. Each new letter has a simple decorated header and a decorated capital. Volume III (first part of Tome 2) has red and black title-page. Leather is well rubbed with some wear at spine-ends, leather over joints has split at the ends, binding is sound. All four volumes have a bookplate for "Ampleforth Abbey" on inside of front cover together with a small library label at the lower edge, small plain glued labels fixed to upper edge of rear end-papers. Text block edges are speckled red and brown, upper block edges are darkened, lower block edges have a 5-digit reference number written on them. Rear end-paper of Volume I is damaged. Overall in good condition. * These are the Supplement volumes to the 10th ed. (Amsterdam, 1702), which was published in 4 vols. The 4 vols. were a reprint, these 2 supplement volumes meant to update them. Updates in this supplement also have the corrections of the 12th edition which were not published in the so-called Paris Supplement of 1714. New editions and updates like this were characteristic for this encyclopedia: "New material, particularly contemporary events and biographical information, was incorporated, each edition becoming an accurate mirror of the times.
