David Butler and Don Merton
The Black Robin - Saving the World's Most Endangered Bird
Oxford University Press 1992 Paperback, 308pp. This book tells the story of the rare Chatham Island black robin. It will inspire all those concerned with the conservation of endangered species and demonstrates that recovery is possible even in the most extreme cases. In fact, the black robin was nearly extinct--reduced to one surviving breeding pair--when the program described here was put into effect. The innovative techniques used by the team responsible for this effort are described in detail and will allow wildlife biologists around the world to adopt similar strategies suited to their own needs. One of the book's co-authors led the black robin program, and the other was one of the scientists on the team. Written in a lively, nontechnical manner, this book will be of interest to a wide range of conservationists, wildlife biologists, and general readers. First edition. (ISBN: 9780195582604). Very Good.

COULTER, E. Merton
The CIVIL War and Readjustment in Kentucky
Chapel Hill, The University of North Carolina Press, 1926. Hardcover. Small 4to. Burgundy cloth. viii, 468pp. Good plus. Binding a bit rough, rather edgeworn and scuffed; front inner hinge starting but expertly, archivally strengthened, thus strong. Tight, decent first edition of what William E. Parrish called "A good account of the history and character of this key border state; embraces all facets of life there." If this copy is pleasantly worn, it's because of its succession of distinguished owners: The front pastedown bears a large, bold signature and inscription from the author in blue ink: "To Dr. Edward Tuthill / With my esteem and / best wishes. / EM Coulter." Tuthill was head of the Department of History at the University of Kentucky around the time this book was published, and apparently was involved in a failed effort to persuade Coulter to leave the University of Georgia in Athens and come to Kentucky; he's among those thanked in this book's preface. Next is the ownership signature near the top of the front flyleaf of James F. Hopkins, another noted University of Kentucky history professor, editor of the papers of Henry Clay and author of such titles as "A History of the Hemp Industry in Kentucky" (1951) and "The University of Kentucky: Origins and Early Years" (1951). Lastly, below this is the handsome crest bookplate of Ross A. Webb, yet another noted University of Kentucky history professor and author of "Benjamin Helm Bristow: Border State Politician" (1967) and "Kentucky in the Reconstruction Era" (1979). One or more of these owners pencilled checkmarks, brackets and lines in the margins of some pages, though only a few words (albeit a slim example from which to determine authorship)-- so whether Tuthill, Hopkins or Webb marked this volume is difficult to determine -- Tuthill seems most likely. An interesting association copy with an intriguing string of ownerships. NEVINS II, 147. .

COULTER, E. Merton, The South During Reconstruction, 1865-1877
COULTER, E. Merton
The South During Reconstruction, 1865-1877
N.p. Louisiana State University Press, 1947. Hardcover. Small 4to. Maroon cloth with gilt spine lettering. xii, 426p. Illustrations. Very good. Spine faintly sunned, else tight and internally fine. Attractive first edition of Volume VIII (only) in the noted 10-volume "A History of the South" series -- from the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81), and before him of his father, Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate. Front flyleaf bears the senator's large, bold signature and sprinkled throughout the text are the governor's miniscule pencilled (occasionally inked) margin checkmarks and squiggles and occasionally a few words of pencilled commentary; rear flyleaf bears a half dozen pencilled lines of notes as well. Intriguing copy from celebrated father and son politicos who were both noted Civil War buffs, the son signing the book in which his father had made marks and notes. .
