The first English edition, complete in two volumes.In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Translated by Sara Coleridge, an English author and the only daughter of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This work narrates the life of Pierre Terrail, seigneur de Bayard (generally known as the Chevalier de Bayard) a French knight and military leader during the period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Written by Jacques de Mailles in 1527, who credits himself here as "the Loyal Servant", a nobleman of teh Moretel mandate and companion of Chevalier Bayard. In half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, leather to Vol I spine is missing, with top half of paper underneath coming away. Splits to the leather to the joints of Vol II. General rubbing to the extremities. Corners slightly bumped. Previous owner's bookplate to both front pastedowns, with the initials 'JH' and the motto 'Carpe Diem' below the coat of arms. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with scattered spotting to the first and last few leaves. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
