Wyndham Lewis (Ed), Blast War Issue Review of the Great English Vortex No 2 July 1915
Wyndham Lewis (Ed)
Blast War Issue Review of the Great English Vortex No 2 July 1915
London, John Lane, 1915. Paperback. The second installment of Wyndham Lewis and Ezra Pound's very scarce, and pioneering literary magazine 'BLAST&apos. 'Blast' was the magazine for the Vorticist movement. The second and final installment of Blast Magazine. The first edition of this seminal work, which was a modernist movement in art and poetry. Vorticism was partly inspired by Cubism and the movement was first announced in the 1914 issue of 'Blast&apos. Vorticism began in the Rebel Art Centre and has roots in the Bloomsbury Group, Cubism and Futurism. Ezra Pound coined the word 'Vorticism' for the movement and he produced many paintings in the same style. 'Blast Magazine' contained work by Ezra Pound, T.S Eliot and the Vorticists themselves. The eleven signatories of the manifesto were Richard Aldington, Malcolm Arbuthnot, Lawrence Atkinson, Jessica Dismorr, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Cuthbert Hamilton, Wyndham Lewis, Ezra Pound, Helen Saunders and Edward Wadsworth. To this volume the works by T.S Eliot are 'Preludes' and 'Rhapsody of a Windy Night&apos. Wyndham Lewis also writes a review of contemporary art, and Ford Madox Hueffer contributes a poem. There is also an article by Gaudier-Brzeska entitled 'Vortex (Written from the Trenches) which further outlines and describes the Vorticist aesthetic. To the editorial note, Lewis writes how the Vorticists will not stop talking about culture when the war ends. He discusses the state of society and Europe since the commencement of the First World War. The first issue was published thirty three days before war was declared on Germany, and therefore this was the first publication of Blast during the Great War. Illustrated, with several examples of Vorticist art by Wadsworth, Lewis, Roberts, Etchells and Shakespear. A very scarce example of this short-lived movement's main creation. In the original paper wraps. The front wrap is detached but present. Externally, generally smart. Wraps are darkened with creasing to the edges. Small loss to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. With spotting to the title page, and the occasional light spots to the page edges otherwise. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
