¶ Op 27 juli 1668 hoorde Adriaan Koerbagh in de martelkamer van het Amsterdamse stadhuis dat zijn tong moest worden doorboord, zijn rechterduim moest worden afgehakt, zijn boeken moesten worden verbrand, zijn goederen in beslag moesten worden genomen en dat hij voor dertig jaar in het rasphuis moest worden opgesloten. Op 15 oktober 1669 was er in Amsterdam in de buurt van de Oude Nieuwstraat 6 geen doorkomen meer aan. Het stond zwart van de mensen die reikhalzend een glimp trachtten op te vangen van de uitvaart van diezelfde Adriaan Koerbagh. Nadat de lijkkist door een opeengepakte menigte heen het huis was uitgedragen, daalde er een pikzwarte kip op neer. De boodschap was duidelijk: de kip kwam in opdracht van de duivel de inktzwarte ziel van de overleden ketter opeisen. Adriaan Koerbaghs hoofdzonde was de publicatie van Bloemhof, een blasfemisch woordenboek waarin hij met een scherpe pen vrijmoedig de dogma's van de publieke gereformeerde kerk bespotte. Tijdens zijn verhoor gaf Koerbagh toe contact te hebben gehad met Spinoza. Wie was deze vooruitstrevende zeventiende-eeuwse arts, jurist en ?losoof?
