JOHN LOGAN CAMPBELL
Poenamo Sketches of the Early Days of New Zealand Romance and Reality of Antipodean Life in the Infancy of a New Colony (Signed by Author)
London and Edinburgh: Williams and Norgate, 1881. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. This is a Very Good Copy of this Book in original green cloth boards with gilt title lettering to spine and the upper cover.Scarce title and an Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the half title page and it reads....I think '' Mrs Shotten as presented by the Author Auckland March 1890 '' Illustrated with some charming sepia type photographs and the large folding map of the west and east coast is present along with frontispiece of the Author.Slight weakness at title page and frontispiece join.Text block is clean with only minor spotting to page edges..There appears to be 3 extra photographs to the front pastedown and front endpaper also. This is a fascinating work by John Logan Campbell who left his home in Scotland in 1839 after taking his medical degree, and he then sailed to New Zealand arriving in 1840.This is the story he wrote for his children later in his life, to tell them of his adventures in Coromandel and the brand-new city of Auckland. The adventures of the rather carefree young man tell of his quest for fortune and they include the romantic interlude camping in a Maori village and also of the drama and mystery of a chief's tangi; the mysterious tragedies of the law of tapu; the extravagant feasts; the wisdom of the old chief Kanini all these make Poenamo one of the most stirring tales of the birth of a city and written for his children whom he thought may not read it until after his death. He describes it as written in two parts, the first period to refer almost entirely to himself and the 2nd period is to deal historically with the colony and the birth of the infant capital of a new born colony born to the crown of England.8vo (xii) 359pp plus 8pp of publisher ads to rear of the book.First Edition [1881]. Very Good .
