London, The House of Commons , 1800. First edition. Leather. A first edition copy of these reports into the Public Records of the United Kingdom, ordered by the House of Commons. The scarce first edition. In a half calf binding on marbled boards. With seven folding plates, four folding tables and nine tables. Collated complete. Volume fifteen only out of a sixteen-volume series of reports from different committees of the House of Commons. This volume includes two reports from the select committee appointed to inquire into the state of the public records of the Kingdom. Including a table of public records by Al. Luders and one by J. Planta and John Caley. Reported by Charles Abbot, 1st Baron Colchester. Abbot was a British barrister and statesman who served as Speaker of the House of Commons between 1802-1817. He played a crucial role in the formation of the Record Commission, which inquired into the custody and public accessibility of state archives. He also helped establish the first UK census in 1801. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Joints cracked, with leather lifting. Rubbing to the extremities. Marks to the boards and spine. Some loss to the leather of the spine. Cracks to the leather. Front hinge is tender, rear hinge is weak but both are still attached. The odd spot and scattered handling marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age-toned but generally bright and clean. Light spotting throughout. Stain to the upper title page, and pages 1-6. Creasing throughout. Stain to the upper corner and spotting to the two folding plates opposite page 136. Additionally, some creasing to the first one. Light stain to the top of the folding plates between 392 and 393, otherwise bright and clean. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
