The Well of Loneliness
Paris, The Pegasus Press, 1928. Cloth. A smart early impression of this lesbian novel from British author Radclyffe Hall, with a commentary from English-French social reformer Henry Havelock Ellis. First published by Jonathan Cape July 1928. Here re-issued by The Pegasus Press December 1928. A groundbreaking work in lesbian literature, this novel follows the life of Stephen Gordon, an Englishwoman from an upper-class family whose "sexual inversion" is apparent from an early age. She finds love with Mary Llewellyn while serving as an ambulance driver during the First World War, but their happiness together is marred by social isolation and rejection. Written by Marguerite Antonia Radclyffe Hall, an English poet and author who often went by the name of John in adulthood, best known for this work. With commentary by Henry Havelock Ellis, an English-French physician, eugenicist, writer, progressive intellectual and social reformer who studied human sexuality. Ellis published works on a variety of sexual practices and inclinations, as well as on transgender psychology In the original black cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd small spot or handling mark and minor age toning to the endpapers. The Well of Loneliness
Paris, The Pegasus Press, 1928 . Cloth. An early edition of Radclyffe Hall"s groundbreaking, censored novel that challenged British society with its exploration of lesbian identity. In the publisher's original cloth binding. An early edition of Radclyffe Hall's landmark novel in LGBTQ+ literature. This particular edition is the 1928 Pegasus Press reissue, the third printing, as part of an effort to circumvent British censorship by publishing the book abroad. The novel centers on Stephen Gordon, an Englishwoman who identifies as an "invert," a term used at the time to describe homosexuality. Whilst The Well of Loneliness portrays homosexuality as a natural God-given state, some readers have criticised the protagonists expressions of shame and self-hatred. In spite of its lack of explicit content, it was banned in the UK shortly after publication under the Obscene Publications Act of 1857, leading to the destruction of copies and a prolonged absence from British bookstores. Marguerite Antonia Radclyffe-Hall, more known under her pen name Radclyffe Hall, was an English poet and author, best known for this particular work. In adulthood, she often called herself John, rather than Marguerite. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Slight rubbing to boards and spine with one or two slight handling marks. Rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in the odd small closed tear to head and tail of spine. slight cockling to front free endpaper, with hinge slightly strained. Previous owner's inscription from Berlin, 1929, to front free-endpaper. Slight offsetting to endpapers with the odd spot. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and lean if a little age toned with one or two spots, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
