The first edition of English writer, satirist and bookseller William Hone's work of early nineteenth century literary criticism.Illustrated with four copper engraved plates - one folding, and two engraved by George Cruikshanks - and a number of vignette woodcuts. Collated, complete.William Hone reprints and annotates unpublished manuscripts of liturgical plays held by the British Museum, telling stories o fthe birth, death, and resurrection of Christ, and other Biblical miracles. Hone also discusses the ecclesiastical shows in which these plays were historically performed. Former owner's inscription to head of title page.An excellent first edition from an author is most remembered for his victory in the three blasphemy trials brought against him by the government in 1817. William Hone (1845-1923) arrived New Zealand in 1862, and was on the Otago gold-diggings later going to the Waikato he served with the military settlers through the war. Finally settling in Waverley, Taranaki he had the first flourmill. Prose and notes contain much of New Zealand historical interest. CONDITION Burgundy Morocco with blind tooled border and bright gilt spine title, frontis illus, 380 pages. Very bright and crisp with light dust spotting to ends and edges, gift note and name to first blank, has been in a cover at some stage with minor tape ghosting to eps, damage at spine heel o/w unworn. Very Good.

Indicies at rear of Volume II. First 8 pages, Vol I, an 1843 publisher catalogue, with page 1 listing ".. Books published in the Pickwick Style." Illustrated with 436 engravings [per t.p.], including frontis in each volume. 8vo. 9" X 5-5/8". Modest binding wear. 1940s ownership inscription, noting "Bought from Taylor's book shop Hull. Paid 6/- for the two volumes." Very Good. "William Hone was an English writer, satirist and bookseller. His victorious court battle against government censorship in 1817 marked a turning point in the fight for British press freedom." This, a literary almanac with weather & literature for every day, was extremely popular during his lifetime, continuously in print, and issued in many different editions.
