Sir John Hammerton [Ed.], The Great War: I Was There, 1914-1918
Sir John Hammerton [Ed.]
The Great War: I Was There, 1914-1918
London, The Amalgamated Press, 1938. Leather. Three bound volumes of a fascinating periodical edited by Sir John Hammerton, printing first hand accounts of British soldier's experiences in the First World War. Published in fifty-one issues, and commonly found in either individual issued in paper wraps, or bound in three large volumes. Present here, however, are three volumes in which issues are rebound from the original parts, with wraps removed.Volume III concludes at page 1216, meaning that the final 844 pages of the work are lacking. These pages would have contained accounts dated between March 12th 1917 and November 11th, 1918.Richly illustrated throughout with photographs.Editor Sir John Hammerton's foreword to this work explains that 'our main concern in this new work is neither with victory nor defeat. Tactics and strategy get little consideration in these pages. Our preoccupation from first to last is with the individual and personal reactions of events upon those who took part in them, from Private to Field-Marshal [..] nothing that we print here had its origin outside of immediate personal experience." Rebound in calf backed, cloth covered boards. Significant rubbing to back strip heads and tails, with further rubbing to back strip centre of volume I. Boards bright. Front hinge of volumes I and II strained, with boards firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
