The pictures were painted in by hand. 650 pieces, by Numbered 1-650, 40 copies were numbered from I-XL on van Gelder-Velin with the three-tang watermark, printed on van Gelder-Japan and 20 preliminary prints of the pictures, on Imperial Japan, combined in folders "- Colophon. Reliure de l'époque de plein cartonngae anthracite, plats ornés d'un large décor romantique à froid dans le goût de Boutigny, comportant un important entrelacs de filets à froid, filets gras et maigres à froid encadrant les plats, dos lisse, titre doré. Edition originale rare (seul un exemplaire au CCfr). Elle s'agrémente - et ext complète - de ses 6 délicates eaux-fortes gravées à pleine-page et tirées sur Chine appliqué, signées de Gandon (lesquelles ne figuraient pas dans la première édition allemande). ''Adolphe Gandon fut l'élève de Diday puis s'établit en Suisse où il passa le reste de sa vie. Il occupe une place marquante dans l'art suisse''. (in Bénézit). ''Unique traduction française des Californische Skizzen, parues en 1856 à l'adresse de Leipzig. Elle accorde une large place à la description des moeurs et coutumes de Californie. Friedrich Gerstäcker (1816-1872) est presque un inconnu en France, alors que dans le monde germanique il fut celui qui fit connaître les Etats-Unis dans les pays de langue allemande: c'est en 1837 que ce Hambourgeois de naissance effectua son premier voyage en Amérique où il mena une vie itinérante en exerçant quantité de petits métiers ni plus ni moins bien traité que la plupart des émigrants européens qui suivaient alors le même chemin. Il revint en Allemagne en 1843 après avoir parcouru le pays en tous sens, de la frontière canadienne au Texas, et de l'Arkansas à la Louisiane. Il repartit en Amérique en 1849, visita notamment la Californie, avant de découvrir l'Amérique du Sud et Tahiti. 'Ses expériences lui fournirent la matière de relations personnelles, de romans d'aventures et le conduisirent également à traduire plusieurs écrivains américains (Melville, Farnham, Bill Truck, etc.)''. Other than light age toning to endpapers, the book itself is in exceptionally tight and pristine condition; jacket shows mild edgewear and age toning. Astonishingly fresh, bright turn-of-the-century copy of this fiction (whose title translates "The Ship's Carpenter: The Wreck") by the prolific and popular German novelist and travel writer (1816-72). Color front board image of seaman fleeing a blazing ship onto a lifeboat is outstanding and the plentiful illustrations by famed German artist and illustrator Planck (1870-1956), probably the best known German book artist of the early 20th century, are delightful. Though undated, the ownership signature on front pastedown of John A. Noe, an artist from the famous German colonies known as Amana in Iowa, is dated December 25, 1912, thus approximately dating this edition. Scarce in this superb condition and the circa 120-year-old dust jacket is a rare survivor. .
