Half calf over marbled boards, VG. 2 volumes, [iv]+353pp, [ii]+325pp, bound without half titles & without the final advert leaf in volume II ( although the ghostly off setting from the leaf can be seen & a facsimile is laid in ), pp23-26 detached in volume II ( seemingly never bound in ), leather a little rubbed along the edges, internally bright, a nice set. Hardback , no dustjacket.
¶ First edition in English of a 1732 novel written by d'Auvigny with assistance from his mentor Desfontaines. Jean Du Castre d'Auvigny [ 1712 - 1743 ] French soldier & writer, He served with distinction in the light cavalry and was killed at the Battle of Dettingen on June 27, 1743. Abbé Pierre François Guyot-Desfontaines [ 1685 - 1745 ] French journalist, translator and popular historian. Elizabeth Gunning [ 1769 - 1823 ] English novelist & translator of French works. Gunning writes - 'the translator flatters herself that the trifling alterations she has thought it necessary to make from the original work, having nothing to do with the historical, charateristical, political, or critical parts of it, will meet with indulgence, particularly from her own sex, who certainly cannot be displeased that female delicacy should be preserved in all its purity'.
