Art Nouveau and the Swiss Poster. First Edition. New Condition
Geneva: Patrick Cramer, 2006 (Alan Wofsy Fine Arts distribution). Decorative board. 32.5 x 23.5 cm. 156 pages, 129 color illustrations.. In Switzerland as elsewhere, Art Nouveau transformed the poster. It embodies dreams of Beauty and Justice, in which the poster finds a new dimension. From a vulgar and despised advertising medium, it becomes, overnight, a respected and admired work of art. This book carefully examines this spectacular transformation by integrating it into the great social, intellectual and artistic movements which rocked Europe at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In Switzerland, artists trained in Paris or Munich are becoming the animating artisans of this change. By drawing from French or English Art Nouveau, from German Jugendstil, they create movements that are sometimes different, sometimes converging, which give the 1900 Swiss poster an exceptional level. French-speaking Switzerland is dominated by Geneva, where the pioneers of artistic posters flourish, who add a strong local connotation to their French inspiration. In German-speaking Switzerland, German or Austrian influences are felt, but they too are synthesized in a strong Swiss spirit dominated by the high personality of Ferdinand Hodler who gives him exceptional impetus. This well-documented work introduces for the first time this exceptional adventure which illuminates the history of European Art Nouveau in an original light. It shows how a country with marked cultural diversity synthesizes different influences in a powerful and original movement. Jean-Charles Giroud, deputy director of the Geneva Public and University Library, curator of the poster collection, is the author of numerous books and studies on the Swiss poster. .

A Century of Swiss Winter Sports Posters. First Edition. New Condition
Geneva: Patrick Cramer, 2006 (Alan Wofsy Fine Arts distribution). Decorative boards. 32.5 x 23.5 cm. 192 pages, 156 color illustrations.. At the end of the 19th century, Switzerland saw the flourishing of two phenomena that nothing seems to bring together, winter sports and artistic posters. The former find in the geography and climate of the country an incomparably favorable environment, the latter take advantage of the dynamism of talented artists to blossom and develop in an extraordinary movement of creativity. Faced with the necessities of commerce and advertising, the two meet and lead to the production, over more than a century, of thousands of posters, many of which, by their quality, pay tribute not only to winter sports but also to the beauty of the mountain and the genius of those who made them. In order to get to know these exceptional works of art better, the publisher Patrick Cramer in Geneva is today publishing a book, the only one to date exclusively devoted to them, which allows them to be admired, to appreciate their diversity, to understand their evolution. A historical text and a wide choice of reproductions allow the reader to dive into this spectacular universe. The best Swiss designers are present, such as Emil Cardinaux, Burkhard Mangold, Wilhelm Friedrich Burger, Carl Moos, Hugo Laubi, Alois Carigiet, Alex Walter Diggelmann, Philipp Giegel. Some even specialize in what they take to a remarkable level, such as Walther Koch or Carlo Pellegrini. The big Swiss resorts are celebrating, such as Davos, St. Moritz, Grindelwald, Wengen, Gstaad, Montana Crans, Zermatt and so many other places in the Alps and Jura which will sometimes become world famous. This exceptional work, widely illustrated, significantly enriches knowledge of the field and offers the amateur the opportunity to marvel at the contact with quality works of art which, despite sometimes a century of age, remain as fresh as 'on the first day. The text and the choice of posters are by Jean-Charles Giroud, curator of the collection of posters of the Library of Geneva, who has carried out several studies on the history of the Swiss poster. .

Conquering the Skies in Swiss Poster Art. First Edition. New Condition
Geneva: Patrick Cramer, 2008(Alan Wofsy Fine Arts distribution). Decorative board. 32.5 x 23.5 cm. 160 pages, 160 color illustrations.. The story of the conquest of the air is memorialized one of the great human undertakings. In the nineteenth century, balloon flights were veritable spectacles that attracted crowds and produced remarkable posters, true relics of a daring pioneer era. In Switzerland, from 1909, the meetings multiplied and met with a success difficult to imagine today. Flight is a dream; aviators are celebrated as heroes. The most important events are accompanied by often very spectacular posters. Today they form an exceptional heritage for their quality and rarity. The First World War advanced aviation by leaps and bounds. In 1919, the first airlines were created. Their publicity goes through the poster which bears witness to the beginnings of commercial aviation. The biggest names in Swiss poster art, then at the height of their glory, donate works to celebrate the conquest of the sky: Emil Cardinaux, Eric de Coulon, Ernst Emil Schlatter, Otto Baumberger, Niklaus Stoecklin. Through their compositions - and those of many other graphic designers - the history of Swiss aviation can be read in watermark. From the 1930s onwards, posters of large Swiss companies such as Ad Astra, Alpar and above all the Swissair bear witness to their growing commercial importance. To win over affluent customers, these companies pay particular attention to their advertising and secure the services of the best graphic designers. Airshows continue to be all the rage. The posters which advertise them show not only the prowess of pilots, often military, but also the evolution of machines and their modernity. After World War II, commercial aviation experienced tremendous development. The posters testify with great fidelity to the development of Swissair's global network, its most beautiful planes, its stylish and attentive staff. The compositions of Herbert Leupin, Donald Brun, Heinz Looser, Kurt Wirth or Carlo Vivarelli are broadcast around the world and serve as ambassadors of high-quality Swiss graphic design. The movement continued in the sixties and seventies. The airshows, after a certain eclipse, find a considerable success and make it possible to discover old devices which appear from now on as an undeniable technical heritage. The posters bear witness to this. In order to better understand these works, these artists and this exceptional epic, the publisher Patrick Cramer in Geneva is publishing a book retracing the history of this unique and little-known chapter of the Swiss poster. A scholarly text of a historical nature accompanies a rich iconography showing the main posters produced over almost two centuries. Written by Jean-Charles Giroud, it draws on the most recent work in the history of poster art. This exceptional, richly illustrated book will be of interest to the general public, lovers of applied art and art historians alike. Jean-Charles Giroud, curator for many years of the collection of posters of the Library of Geneva, has already written numerous books and studies on the Swiss poster. He is now the director of this institution. .

Geo Dorival, 1879-1968. The Posters. First Edition. New Condition
Geneva: Patrick Cramer, 2009 (Alan Wofsy Fine Arts distribution). Decorative board.s 32.5 x 23.5 cm. 198 pages, 274 color illustrations.. Geo Dorival (1879-1968) is one of the most important poster artists of French travel at the start of the twentieth century. From 1907, he produced numerous posters and advertising documents for railway companies. He works in the service of the largest seaside resorts on the Ocean and the French Riviera, well-known spa towns and fashionable mountain destinations. A talented colorist, Geo Dorival gives his compositions a pleasant and attractive atmosphere. Particularly fond of twilight and nocturnal atmospheres which allow him to use original and unexpected ranges, he often gives his posters a mysterious appearance. Geo Dorival is very successful and also receives numerous advertising, press, automotive and food orders. Close to Parisian entertainment circles, he produces several representations of Chinese shadows. He adapts the principle to his posters, thus accentuating their originality and their Art Nouveau dimension. He celebrates nascent aviation in a series of compositions announcing the first exhibitions of "aerial locomotion". Interrupted during the First World War - during which he produced works of a patriotic nature - his career as a poster artist for tourism resumed with a vengeance in 1918. However, his production fell since he became in the meantime artistic director and then director of the L'Art et la Mode magazine. But Geo Dorival cannot have two careers at the same time. In 1928, he put an end to his poster artist work on a masterpiece, the Vers le Mont-Blanc triptych, in which he combined with incomparable success his personal style with great graphic modernity. Geo Dorival therefore devoted himself exclusively to his magazine, which he ensured the success. He died in 1968, leaving behind around 110 posters, including many masterpieces. This work gives, after a biographical and artistic introduction, the catalogue raisonné. Richly illustrated, it offers the first panorama of the work of Geo Dorival, a key player in the French tourist poster, for which it takes one of the first places. Jean-Charles Giroud, curator for many years of the collection of posters of the Library of Geneva, has already written numerous books and studies on the Swiss poster. He is now the director of this institution. .
