Originally published in shorter form in Mainz 1971. Gehlen commanded all intelligence operations in Russia and the Balkans before delivering himself and his service to the Americans at the end of WWII. From this sprang the Gehlen Organisation whose knowledge of Russian affairs and influence on Western policy became a byword. In 1956 the Organisation was transferred to the German Federal Government and until his retirement in 1968 Gehlen remained in supreme command of the German secret service. Enser, p.398
