To 4Z4 affecting a few words to verso. Plain, modern dark brown calf, raised bands, green Morocco title label to spine, blind-tooled borders, endpapers renewed, edges faintly marbled. Spine and board edges a little rubbed, joints slightly creased, some bookseller's pencil notes to ffep. A very good, soundly rebound copy. La Calprenède's (1610-1663) Merovingian historical romance, begun in 1661. It remained incomplete (in seven volumes) at his death two years later and was continued by Pierre d'Ortigue de Vaumorière (1610-1693), with the 12th and final volume appearing in 1670. The first edition of the then-extant text in English was published in 1662 by Samuel Speed. ESTC R19768; Wing (2nd ed.) L126.

The twelfth edition of this work in a full calf binding, with decorative gilt to the spine and boards. All edges gilt. Ink inscription to the verso of the front free end paper, dated 1889. William Edmondsoune Aytoun (1813-1865) and Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909) met in around 1841, and together they wrote, under the pseudonym Bon Gaultier, a series of humorous articles on the fashions and follies of the time, in which were interspersed the verses which afterwards became popular as the Bon Gaultier Ballads. In this twelfth edition of the Bon Gaultier Ballads are Spanish, American and miscellaneous ballads, with illustrations by Richard Doyle, John Leech and Alfred Crowquill. In a full calf binding. All edges, end papers and paste downs marbled. Numerous illustrations by Richard "Dickie" Doyle (1824-1883), John Leech (1817-1864), Alfred Henry Forrester (1804-1872), known under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill, who were all well-known for their illustrations for Punch. William Edmondstoune Aytoun (1813-1865) and Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909) were both Scottish poets. In around 1841, they became acquainted, and together they wrote a series of humorous articles on the fashions and follies of the time, in which were interspersed the verses which afterwards became popular as the Bon Gaultier Ballads (1855).
